One of the most original voices of her generation
Circuit des Yeux
“An album bursting with ambition, alternating between moments of intimate beauty and stretches of dense, disorienting fog”: Pitchfork is hugely enthusiastic about the newly released album from Circuit des Yeux. Following a stint performing as her country-esque alter-ego Jackie Lynn, the Chicago-based Haly Fohr is back in her most well-known manifestation. On ‘Reaching for Indigo’, Fohr combines the cerebral with the physical, making use of the most powerful item in her toolbox, her unique four-octave voice.
In 2015 Circuit des Yeux appeared on pretty much all the year-end lists with her majestic album ‘In Plain Speech’ – check out the track ‘Do The Dishes’ if you still need convincing. With her new album, the American artist once again proves to be one of the most original voices of her generation. The stand-out single ‘Paper Bag’ is classic Circuit des Yeux: an ambient run-up to a haunting song in which Fohr’s baritone shines. If we had to try and describe her unique sonic character, we would say she sounds like the love child of Nico and Scott Walker.
In the past Fohr has worked together with stellar acts such as Glenn Branca, Lee Ranaldo, Bill Orcutt and Bonny ‘Prince’ Billy. She is supported on her fifth LP by a full band, including members of Bitchin Bajas and CAVE. Her show at Vooruit will be her only performance in Belgium in 2018.
Natalie Chami adopted the TALsounds moniker in 2009 for her solo explorations in the drone, ambient, and electro-acoustic improv disciplines. In live performance, Chami's analog synthesizers weave together into drifting loops that evolve in tandem with her vocal leads and choral harmonies. Her meditative sessions stretch into hypnotizing depths of stream-of-consciousness multi-instrumental input, sinking into expanses of infinite sustain and cresting into bursts of noise from an arsenal of oscillators and effects pedals.
After a series of tape releases on labels like Hausu Mountain and Moog's own physical imprint, Chami released her first TALsounds LP, ‘Love Sick’, with New York's Ba Da Bing Records. As a member of free music trio Good Willsmith, she has toured the country and released eight albums since 2012, including the LPs ‘The Honeymoon Workbook’ (2014) and ‘Things Our Bodies Used To Have’ (2016) on Mexico City-based label Umor Rex. Chami also performs as half of ambient duo l'eternebre. She is Lebanese, was born in Ontario, and lives in Chicago.
