Debt as a new currency

After 'The Automated Sniper' - where you, the visitor were provided with a joystick to shoot at two performers - Julian Hetzel returns to Ghent. This time, in 'Schuldfabrik', the German performer explores various ways to wash away 'debt'. Hetzel thereby develops an ingenious barter system in which debt is used as a new currency. Venture at your own risk into this factory with no exit.

The word 'Schuld' has both a moral and an economic meaning in German: 'to be guilty' and 'to be in debt'. 'Schuldfabrik' explores the conflict between the two and the economic potential of debt. In this participative installation/performance, 'debt' and 'guilt' are the raw materials to be processed and eventually traded. 'Schuldfabrik' takes place on location, and that includes a hip concept store, a soap factory, a beauty clinic and a confession room. Wash away the pain!

Julian Hetzel creates strong visual theater, installation work and lecture performances that are produced and showcased internationally. His work is a non-verbal - yet not silent - way to confront today's neoliberal economy.
