New compositions for screen

film / experimental / rock / pop / electronica / hip hop

This year Vooruit and Film Festival Ghent will continue the tradition of joining forces for eleven days in October. During Film Fest Ghent, in addition to screening a selection of outstanding films, Vooruit will host VIDEODROOM, a series of live music evenings by top musicians. You can look forward to live renditions of original scores as well as some completely unique improvisations. In both cases you can expect one-off cross-overs that you’ll only ever experience at Vooruit.

In a previous edition, instrumental doom ensemble Earth improvised an accompaniment to the Japanese cult film ‘Belladonna of Sadness’, while last year the legendary prog-rock band Goblin performed the whole soundtrack to George A. Romero’s epic zombie flick ‘Dawn of the Dead’. With VIDEODROOM you can count on a unique programme, surprising one-off projects and exciting combos in which musicians take on both iconic films and forgotten cinematic gems.

thu 11.10 - Kilbourne plays 'Blade' + afterparty

Some people are destined to devastate. Marked by her politicized take on dance music and singular dedication to the harder styles, Kilbourne has crafted a queer sound all her own, drawing connections between hardcore, industrial, club music, the euphoric, and the cinematic, often only to break them down and begin rebuilding. Last year Kilbourne made a new score for Blade, the 1998 Vampire Horror/Action film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Directed by Stephen Norrington, starring Wesley Snipes, Stephen Dorff, Kris Kristofferson and N’Bushe Wright, the film tells the story of Blade, a half-mortal, half-vampire man who seeks to avenge his mother’s death by killing evil vampires.

It’s alive! James Whales’ ‘Frankenstein’, based on Mary Shelley’s book, about a scientist and his monster - created from body parts - is still a masterpiece. Kevin Toma wrote an original score for the film. During VIDEODROOM he performs it live on piano and synthesizer, in combination with subdued samples and soundscapes.

tue 16.10 - Oona Libens - 'Pharmakon' / Lea Bertucci - 'projection/reflection'

Oona Libens - 'Pharmakon'

The work of Belgian-Swedish filmmaker and artist Oona Libens is a mix of expanded cinema performance, sound art and pre-cinematographic magic tricks. Libens' combination of slide projections, film, shadow play and tape loops result in completely unique performances. 'Pharmakon' is the third part - after 'Nausea' (2014), about the sea, and Libens graduation project 'Celeste' (2012), about the universe.

Lea Bertucci - 'projection/reflection'

Lea Bertucci is an interdisciplinary artist, composer and improviser working with installation, sound, and projection. In recent years, her projects have expanded to site-specific compositions for electronics and instruments, multichannel sound installations and music concrete collage. Bertucci has an interest in (mis)representing space by using light as an active sculptural force, the projected image has proved to be an ideal vehicle for her to explore ideas. During 'projection/reflection' a projector placed behind Bertucci throws a focused beam of light onto a reflective patch on the performer's back, the resulting pattern of light is reflected onto the wall behind her.

thu 18.10 - Aïsha Devi / Abyss X / Slagwerk dj's

Aïsha Devi

Swiss-Tibetan electronica producer and singer Aïsha Devi makes euphoric, deconstructed, filmic dance music. Her live sets always feature impressive audiovisual elements. For her new show, Aïsha Devi will perform within a 360 degree panoramic projection, designed by the French visual artist Emile Barret.

Abyss X

Hypermodern, uncensored and honestly raw electronica: the Cretan artist Abyss X makes few concessions in her music. She blends mysterious hymns from her home country with jazz, folk, techno and noise eruptions. Abyss X draws on her dance and theatre background for her mesmerising live performances. The result is an enveloping spectacle that combines live electronica with performance and aspects of opera, choreography and dramaturgy.

fri 19.10 - GAIKA presents 'Akira'

30 years ago (!) the Japanese anime film ‘Akira’ came out, written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. This casually brilliant post-apocalyptic anime – based on the manga comic series of the same name – soon acquired cult status. With its kinetic energy, limitless imagination and dystopian themes, ‘Akira’ influenced a whole generation of manga and science fiction lovers. One of those fans is London producer and rapper GAIKA, who performed at Vooruit in March 2018, providing the phenomenal closing act to the hip-hop festival Out The Frame. During VIDEODROOM, GAIKA will pay homage to ‘Akira’ with a complete remix of the film in both sound and image. An all-new, all-enveloping, once-in-a-lifetime experience!
