- Far field
When we inaugurated our patio last year we also welcomed the Green Bastards Garden in our tower garden. This year, gardener Willem Van Gucht & Onbetaalbaar are once more bringing forgotten plants to our tower garden!
Nearly all Green Bastards are back in the patio garden. Some bastards are growing well and are already big, but most of them still have a lot of growing to do.
GREEN BASTARDS ARE EXPANDING: FAR FIELD
Last year many people told gardener Willem: 'nice, all these unknown edible plants, but what do they actually taste like?' So this year we decided to expand the garden, but because the tower garden is too small to sow and grow the Green Bastards on a larger scale, we started searching for a field or garden where we could do that. Quite soon we came across Far Field, a permaculture project* in Merendree. Far Field had moved at the end of the previous growing season and still had some space available, and that’s where we will now be growing the Green Bastards.
During the Transitiefestival (on October 7th, at Vooruit) Avalon will cook using the Green Bastards vegetables, marking the conclusion and pinnacle of the Green Bastard 2014 season.
HELP NEEDED ON THE FIELD!
The piece of Far Field land has been fallow for a few years so it requires quite some work: there are lots of weeds, no pathways, sandy soil, etc. Anyone who feels like farming with us is more than welcome to join! Contact gardener Willem for more information!
GREEN BASTARDS GARDEN TOURS DURING THE ‘GENTSE FEESTEN’
During the Gentse Feesten you can go take a look at the Green Bastards Garden at Vooruit where gardener Willem will show you around and provide some explanations. Afterwards, the Natuurpunt tour will continue to some other ‘delicious’ spots throughout the city. You can sign up for this tour on their website.
Just like last summer, the Green Bastards are coming back to our tower garden this year to grow forgotten plants and vegetables, and they don’t color inside the lines! The Green Bastards Garden is a project by gardener Willem Van Gucht, who is sharing his enthusiastic plant and vegetable knowledge, while ONBETAALBAAR’s creative gang is using upcycled materials to create the garden’s beautiful design.
*Permaculture is an agricultural project developed in such way that it sustains itself just like a natural eco system.
