Born in 1979 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, she studied at the Villa Arson, Nice, France and at the Academy of Media Art Cologne (KHM) in Germany, where she graduated in 2007 with a MA in audio-visual media art.
The work of Juliana Borinski blurs the borders between different practices such as video, experimental cinema, photography and performance. Her expanded cinema installations often integrate basic new technologies materials or machines referring to historical media techniques or physic experiments. Contrasting with the contemporary technological complexity and aesthetics, they propose very simple sensitive experiences: the contemplation of phenomenon or abstract images. Proposing interfaces between spectators and reality, those installations try to focus on the original role of media and its aesthetic potential.
Her work was recently shown in different intenational art events such as WRO biennal for media art, Wroclaw, Poland. Zur Zeit, Künstler Palais Thurn & Taxis, Bregenz, Austria, Transterritoriale Generation, Parco das Artes, São Paulo, Brazil, Borderline Behaviour, TENT, IFFR 2007, Rotterdam, Expanded Media, 20th Stuttgarter Filmwinter, Würtembergischer Kunstverein, Stuttgart, Germany or Autopsia and Performing Media during the Art Cologne 2006 and 2007.
She has been nominated or awarded for different media art prizes such as Tiger Award, Rotterdam (NL) BM.Mediale, Begheim (D), Media in Space, Stuttgart (D), or Liedts-Messen Foundation Award, Gent (B), WRO media art biennal (PL).
