The last couple of months Vooruit has not only looked back at its past, but we have also been thinking about the future. On this closing day of Possible Futures and VOORUIT100 we ask ourselves questions like: what have we learned during VOORUIT100? What do we want to carry with us for the next months and years? What kind of world would you like to live in in 5 years’ time? And what are you willing to do to contribute? What is your “small revolution”? Get inspired and help us to develop new idea’s and actions.

OPENING LECTURE
Rik Pinxten: Small Revolutions

11:00-12:00 – for free but with reservations – in Dutch / English translation available in print

In his book ‘Small Revolutions’, professor Rik Pinxten (UGent) talks about small creative actions and how they can make a difference in our daily lives and in the world. Sometimes we feel powerless to change things because we seem so small. But Pinxten shows that change doesn’t necessarily has to come from mass movements. Change can come bottom-up from small initiatives like urban agriculture and local trade.

Before Pinxten starts off, Andrea Bozic will read ‘A World’,  A World is a manifesto in the form of an artwork that changes format depending on the context it is placed in. ‘A World’ is an invitation to rethink the world. On Possible Futures all the sentences of the manifesto are spread throughout the building.

‘How can art be useful?’ by Florian Malzacher
lecture: 13:15-13:45 Dansstudio – for free – in English
break-out: 13:45-14:15 Majolica

Where ever societies get shaken up – in the Arabic world, through the Occupy Movements, or the protests in Greece, Spain or lately in Turkey: Artists are always among the first to join in. But does art itself play a role in this? How can art be a tool? What does it mean, not to represent politics but to create political situations?

From the famous pranks by The Yes Men to the gospels of Reverend Billy, Yomango! shoplifting art, the Russian dissidents of Voina to the former Mayor of Bogota, Antanas Mockus – this short lecture looks for an art, that engages itself directly for concrete causes, and sees usefulness, with the words of the Cuban artist and activist Tania Bruguera, “as an aesthetic category.”

Florian Malzacher is Artistic Director of Impulse Theater Biennale in Bochum, Cologne, Düsseldorf & Mülheim/Ruhr as well as a freelance curator, dramaturge and writer. 2006-12 he was co-programmer of the interdisciplinary festival steirischer herbst in Graz/Austria where in 2012 he also co-curated the 170-hours marathon „Truth is concrete“ on artistic strategies in politics. His publications include books on the theatre companies Forced Entertainment and Rimini Protokoll as well as on the question of curating performing arts..

WORKSHOPS

‘Wha are invasive spieces and how to we deal with them?’ by FoAM, timelab & Lisa Ma
12:15-14:15 Antiekzolder – gratis mits reserveren – in English

FoAM hosts a scenario planning workshop based on speculative designer Lisa Ma’s collaboration with Timelab on Human Invasive Interaction (HII): journeys in making invasive plants and animals a unique local resource rather than an expensive nuisance in Ghent.

These journeys brought together the Naturtarians – a diversity of interested parties including urban foragers, tinkerers, hunters, city ecologists, scientists and chefs – to imagine ways we could close the loop between invasive species, urban ecology, your own dinner table, and possibly more…

FoAM facilitates the workshop using our participatory scenario planning method. Here our burning question concentrates on what Lisa Ma calls prototax – policies, monetary systems and municipal taxation in an era of citizen autonomy promoted by HII. The workshop explores the current situation of the HII economy as well as forces acting upon it, and concludes with a series of possible future scenarios and a discussion about the feasibility and desirability of these in Ghent and beyond.

Sarah Vanhee – Lecture For Every One
15:00-16:30 Foyer Theaterzaal – for free – in Dutch

‘Lecture For Every One’ is not a show. It is an intruder, a gift, a pleasant virus spreading through the complex fabric of the city. Like a friendly stranger, Sarah Vanhee enters community gatherings – a board of directors, a court hearing, a neighbourhood association – to give a brief lecture. She infiltrates as many different contexts as possible, always asking the same question: how, in which language, is it possible to address all citizens collectively and individually in our fragmented society? And can it be done other than through rules and laws, political messages, mass media or advertising? In truth, does a shared frame of reference exist today? Moving ambitiously and widely around the city, Lecture for Every One is an attempt to speak “freely”, in a gesture that combines the singular and the public. This session is mainly meant for people who attended one of the lectures and who want to share their experiences, but everyone is welcome.

Map Of Concerns

In february 2013, the Bâtard team launched its Call for Cooperation, in which it asked for people's concerns. The plan was to collect them, and map them, to end up with a MAP OF CONCERNS that could be used as a dramaturgic tool around which a congress and a festival would be developped. They collect something like a thousand concerns, that we printed on small pieces of paper. From reading them they extracted main "themes" that became the main clusters underwhich they would map the individual concerns, sometimes even with subdivisions within the cluster.
