Dark UK grime meets legendary anime

“I have been hugely influenced by this film and all it inspired, it burned itself onto my mind. This work is a remix in every dimension.” - GAIKA

30 years ago (!) the Japanese anime film ‘Akira’ came out, written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. This casually brilliant post-apocalyptic anime – based on the manga comic series of the same name – soon acquired cult status. With its kinetic energy, limitless imagination and dystopian themes, ‘Akira’ influenced a whole generation of manga and science fiction lovers.

One of those fans is London producer and rapper GAIKA, who performed at Vooruit in March 2018, providing the phenomenal closing act to the hip-hop festival Out The Frame. His work is dark, experimental and catchy as hell: imagine a mix of triphop, dancehall and grime, streaked through with afrofuturistic politics. During VIDEODROOM, GAIKA will pay homage to ‘Akira’ with a complete remix of the film in both sound and image. An all-new, all-enveloping, once-in-a-lifetime experience!

about the artist

From his 2015 debut mixtape ‘Machine’ to the release of ‘Spaghetto’ on the famous Warp Records, the London producer GAIKA effortlessly interweaves Caribbean melodies, political statements and UK slang. A torch-bearer for a new generation of black, British musicians.

Born and raised in Brixton, the rapper earned his stripes as part of the Mancunian rap crew Murkage. More recently he has worked together with transgender hip-hop phenomenon Mykki Blanco. In his solo work the young producer floats freely between performance art, electronic grime (with a twist), triphop, grunge, andd dancehall, with occasional echoes of Prince. Futuristic beats straight from the heart of the London underground!
