The world’s first pay-what-you-can fashion label!
It’s a well-known phenomenon: big brands hijack a youth culture to then mass produce it and sell it back to the same young people. Tagged with their own branding and logos, of course.
With ‘COVERSLUT©’ artist Grace Ndiritu seeks to expose this practice and encourage young people to reappropriate their own culture. To this end, Ndiritu and Manoeuvre – the Ghent-based arts centre for co-creation, craft and diversity – are launching the world’s first pay-what-you-can (PWYC) fashion label. Their new line will be presented at De Koer, an open space for projects and initiatives in the heart of Ghent’s Brugse Poort neighbourhood. An evening of models, live screen-printing, DJs, henna tattoos, food and much more. A project centred on new fashion and democracy.
Grace Ndiritu was taught by Hollywood film director Steve McQueen and has exhibited work at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. In 2014 she was featured in Phaidon’s ‘The 21st Century Art Book’ and Apollo Magazine named her as one of the ten most important and influential artists under the age of 40. Manoeuvre is one of the fixed partners of Vooruit’s Stadsatelier (city atelier).
