Let’s take back our media!
Most digital and traditional media outlets are commercially owned. Shifting interests inevitably lead to a loss of reliability, relevance and impact. To add to this, digital channels are predominantly populist. In 2013, the then-26-year-old activist Aaron Swartz tried to go against the flow of disinformation.
He hacked the library of the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with the intention of making scientific knowledge from more than four million research papers available to the public. When Swartz was sentenced to 35 years in prison for this he hanged himself and became a martyr.
The Swartz case may be tragic, but it serves to underscore the importance of safeguarding our collective knowledge and means of communication from profit-seeking companies. During ‘We Own It #1 - Public speech’ we will explore how to make the media autonomous again by examining good practices, such as those of Apache.be and DeWereldMorgen, but we will also explore the possible pitfalls of this.
After a successful first symposium last season on public services, Vooruit and ACOD Cultuur are joining forces once again. We have four new debates planned for the 2018-2019 season. In the first edition we will take a closer look at public speech. Later in the season we will get stuck into themes such as energy and climate law, sustainable transport and civil action. All the details can be found later on vooruit.be.
