Exuberant rock ‘n’ roll theatre in the spirit of Hunter S. Thompson
“Exuberant rock ‘n’ roll theatre about the history and excesses of the modern Western world.” That’s how Abattoir Fermé describes their latest show, ‘Gonzo’, in which journalism, fiction, art and drugs mingle.
The title refers to Hunter S. Thompson and his journalistic style whereby the line between reporter and subject is blurred. Thompson – enfant terrible, eccentric, activist, gun enthusiast, writer and counterculture icon – is famous for his stream-of-consciousness novel ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’ and the film adaptation. In it he travels, heavily under the influence of all that God forbids, through a feverish and turbulent America of amusement parks, racial tensions, paranoia and unbridled consumerism.
With ‘Gonzo’, Abattoir Fermé delves into the hilarious and disconcerting history of the modern West: from the rock ‘n’ roll of the fifties, via Vietnam and Watergate, to the mountain hut where Thompson put a bullet through his head. And where he had his ashes shot into the air with a cannon.
