Acclaimed novel gets masterful theatre adaptation
A universally acclaimed book, a star of the Flemish theater world and a collaboration between two of the best theatre companies in the country. That ‘Oorlog en Terpentijn’ (War and Turpentine) turns out to be a masterful production should come as no surprise.
Director Jan Lauwers puts his own stamp on the book ‘Oorlog en Terpentijn’ by Stefan Hertmans, a story about the life of Hermans’ grandfather as a painter and soldier before, during and after the First World War.
Actress Viviane De Muynck – who this year was awarded the Ultima Culture Prize for ‘General Cultural Merit’ – delivers a monologue in the foreground while her narrative is played out in the background by two actors. Add to this the live music and live charcoal drawings by Benoît Gob and you’ve got yourself an impressive piece of theatre.
