American minimal music meets opera
A composition by Philip Glass performed by Ictus, Ghent’s Collegium Vocale and the famous American singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega: with ‘Einstein on the Beach’ you’re assured of an enchanting and immersive evening.
Composed by Philip Glass, ‘Einstein on the Beach’ is one of the masterpieces of American minimal music, perhaps even of the 20th century. The title refers to the famous scientist and to the book ‘On the Beach’ by Nevill Schute, which imagines the nuclear downfall of mankind.
‘Einstein on the beach’ is an opera in four parts for ensemble, choir and soloists that does away with the narrative character usually associated with the genre. It is rather more an installation than a theatre production. In this production the visuals are supplied by Dutch artist Germaine Kruip, who moves between performance, visual art and architecture.
