A brilliantly contrived lie
In 2014, BERLIN came to Vooruit with ‘Perhaps all the dragons’, in which 30 people told their life story on 30 screens. One of them was Geert Jan Jansen. His life turned out to be so fascinating that BERLIN decided to devote a whole new show to it.
In 1994, French gendarmes discovered more than 1,600 works by masters such as Picasso, Dalí, Appel, Matisse and Hockney on the estate of Geert Jan Jansen. Upon closer investigation, the paintings turned out to be forgeries of Jansen’s own hand. He was so skilled in his craft that for more than twenty years he managed to fool the whole art world. To this day, four of Geert Jan’s works remain on display in museums across the globe.
For his whole life, Geert Jan has balanced on the line between truth and lies. How much hypocrisy is there in the art world? What is the value of truth at this point? And isn’t it more refreshing to be able to go along with a brilliantly contrived lie?
BERLIN won the Flemish Culture Prize for Performing Arts 2015. The jury praised the company for its “unique interdisciplinary artistic approach”. Minister of Culture Sven Gatz said: “Berlin succeeds like no other in giving the audience a special experience. Their documentary approach results in a unique kind of theatre.”
