An enthralling ode to some exceptional women
In 1949 a group of women were beaten up in Ivory Coast while peacefully protesting against the French colonialists and for the release of political prisoners.
According to legend, Queen Pokou of Ghana sacrificed her son in order to save her people. In ‘Legacy’, Nadia Beugré – a Vooruit performing arts resident since 2017 – honours these and other ‘women in movement’ who fight not for their own interests, but for an ideology and a people.
With this piece, Beugré pays tribute to those women all over the world who fought and sacrificed themselves for their rights, their freedom, their dignity and that of their fellow human beings. She takes inspiration from a specific moment in the history of her native country. Who were these exceptional women? What is their legacy? And how can their courage inspire ours?
‘Legacy’ is an enthralling call to action, orchestrated by 13 women – ten of whom are local performers – giving these heroines the place and the honour they deserve.
