A hybrid mix of photo shoot, film set and concert
In the early 20th century it was considered in good taste to have a death mask hanging on your parlour wall, more specifically that of a young unknown woman who is said to have drowned in the Seine. This inconnue de la Seine (‘unknown woman of the Seine’), with her mysterious smile, represented a beauty ideal for many women and inspired a great many artists. This remains true even today, more than a century later.
Atelier Bildraum, Frederik Neyrinck and Sabryna Pierre bring the myth of this unknown beauty into contemporary visual culture. In their 21st century opera ‘i c o n’ they create a hybrid mix of photo shoot, film set and concert, and show our relationship to the human portrait today.
Just like Andy Warhol and his Factory events, ‘i c o n’ blurs the border between the artist on stage and the viewer in the audience. Icon becomes viewer, model becomes photograph, man becomes woman, victim becomes perpetrator.
With ‘i c o n’, Atelier Bildraum, Frederik Neyrinck and Sabryna Pierre have created an enveloping experience in which dreams and reality are interchangeable – a universal story about beauty, transience and death.
