Can violence that sparks progress be justified?
Moscow, February 1905. A terrorist group from the Socialist Revolutionary Party plots a bombing that targets Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, the ruler of their country. At the time of the planned attack, it transpires that his wife and child are sharing the same carriage as the Grand Duke. The terrorists decide to abort. Some days later one of them carries out the attack successfully and is immediately arrested.
In ‘De rechtvaardigen’ (The righteous), we meet these terrorists the evening before the attack as they are confronted with their ideals and doubts. Together with five actors and a musician, director Eline Arbo has created a theatrical and musical production that explores the moral boundaries of political action. How far are we willing to go to shape the world around us? And can violent acts be justified if they bring about progress?
