Emotionally charged dance version of Mozart’s ‘Requiem’
Choreographer Alain Platel and musician Fabrizio Cassol: a creative fraternity that works. They previously produced work together based on Monteverdi’s ‘Vespers’ (‘vsprs’, 2016), Bach’s ‘St. Matthew Passion’ (‘pitié!’, 2008) and the Western baroque repertoire (‘Coup Fatal’, 2014). For the emotionally charged show ‘Requiem pour L.’ they turn to Mozart for inspiration.
In ‘Requiem pour L.’ we follow a woman’s last hours of life. We experience all of life’s emotions, those associated with death inevitably being part of the whole. The director of the Berliner Festspiele, Thomas Oberender, had this to say about the piece: “I have rarely experienced a performance that engendered such a strong connection both with and among the audience.”
Mozart never finished his ‘Requiem’. This left Cassol the freedom to inject his version with African and Indian jazz sounds. The musician replaced the choir with six singers who sing in Lingala and Swahili. The symphony orchestra has been swapped for a simple ensemble of guitar, accordion, percussion and tuba. Platel’s choreography and staging combine to create a layered and accomplished production.
