“Better a ‘Has Been’ than a ‘Never Was’” - Tony in ‘The Up Series’ (BBC)
After their highly-acclaimed debut ‘The Great Downhill Journey of Little Tommy’, Boris Van Severen and Jonas Vermeulen are taking a different tack. This time it’s not a rock band playing their own soundtrack to their new show, but two DJs bouncing off each other, sampling live music and neon-lit quotes. An electro-opera inspired by the BBC’s ‘The Up Series’, among other influences.
In ‘The only way is UP’, various different protagonists speak up at certain defining moments in their lives: childhood, puberty, young adulthood, and in their thirties, forties and fifties. How much does your attitude with respect to certain things change as you get older? To what extent is your path in life determined from an early age? And is there a way of looking at ageing no longer as an elimination of possibilities but rather something to look forward to?
Boris and Jonas explore these questions in a show about everyday life … set in a surreal universe that feels like one big LSD trip.
