New album from the ex-Sonic Youth guitarist
“I feel the nine songs on ‘Electric Trim’ represent my best work to date.” Coming from someone who was once part of the legendary noise-rock group Sonic Youth, that's really saying something. Lee Ranaldo has a new album out – a little masterpiece according to the music press – and he’s coming to play his new music live with his brand-new band El Rayo. Their only Belgian performance in 2018!
Lee Ranaldo, together with Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon, is still known as one of central figures of Sonic Youth. His adventurous approach to guitar – with alternative tunings and prepared guitars – was fundamental to the band's sound. After the band's split, Ranaldo concentrated on his solo work with The Dust, which also included SY drummer Steve Shelley. With records such as 'Between the Times and the Tides' and' Acoustic Dust', Ranaldo proved to be a classic songwriter of timeless folk rock à la Neil Young.
In contrast with his former solo records, 'Electric Trim' was not created with a live band. This time Ranaldo's starting point was a raw acoustic session. The guitarist then draped several layers of guitar and drums over it together with producer Raul 'Refree' Fernandez. A fine selection of artists made guest contributions, including Sharon Van Etten, Kid Millions, Alan Licht and Nels Cline. Ranaldo on 'Electric Trim': “Holding up such great studio-crafted records as ‘Pet Sounds’ and ‘Revolver’ as our models, we sought not to imitate but to be inspired by those sessions.”
At the beginning of 2016 Ranaldo performed a solo acoustic set on Vooruit's Theatre stage, this time he'll be playing in the Ballroom with his live band.
Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band
Amazing guitarist Chris Forsyth and his band are coming back to Europe to present their last work ‘Dreaming In The Non Dream’ out now on No Quarter Records.
Chris Forsyth is a lauded guitarist, composer, and bandleader whose widescreen art-rock, fusing taut compositions and mercurial improvisations, has earned him a reputation as one of the most distinctive and critically acclaimed guitarists working today. In 2013, he assembled The Solar Motel Band, who quickly developed a reputation as an incredible live act, provoking comparisons to visionary artists such as Television, The Grateful Dead, Popol Vuh, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, and Richard Thompson.
In 2016 he released the double LP ‘The Rarity of Experience’ (No Quarter) to universal raves.
