On October 9, 1817 Ghent University was launched in the Troonzaal of Ghent City Hall. Almost exactly 200 years later, Ghent is celebrating that anniversary with a day full of science, street performances, guided tours, interactive demonstrations, and concerts.
The celebration will kick-off at Vooruit with a festive matinee. During the book presentation ‘Uit de ivoren toren. 200 jaar universiteit Gent’ (Out of the Ivory Tower – 200 years Ghent University) – written by historian Gita Deneckere – a few great voices, opinion makers and past and present Ghent University employees will provide you with an exceptionally interesting morning.
The celebratory book, ‘Uit de ivoren toren. 200 jaar Universiteit Gent’, shows the scope of scientists' social responsibility, both in the past and in present times. Scientists are not researchers in an ivory tower. They often and enthusiastically participate in society, and make efforts to translate their message to a diverse audience - the perfect timing to highlight this.
