A haunting ode to the power of women
Just like in 'Cry Jailolo', in 'Balabala', Eko Supriyanto works with young people from the Indonesian Jailolo - five young women guided by the philosophy behind 'pencak silat', Indonesia’s traditional martial arts. The structure behind this philosophy becomes a metaphor for the different roles of women in Indonesian society.
Slow, rhythmic patterns create an image of primal feminine power, a space for the individual. In 'Balabala', hierarchical cultural and gendered roles disappear, and make way for the power of this young quintet - a haunting ode to the power of women.
