Passionate exorcism exercise about envy
What impact do social media, capitalism, and consumerism have on our feelings, and more specifically, on our envy? In 'Our Carnal Hearts', charismatic and immensely funny performer Rachel Mars investigates, through a performance that is a cross between theater, comedy and singing session and constantly takes you from laughter to dead seriousness.
Mars plays her role of high priestess with verve, in this passionate exorcism exercise that separates envy from religion and political agendas. Using hilarious but beautifully performed songs, she puts envy and success under the microscope, with the infectious 'Humble Brag', for example, a praise to exuberant tweeting. The British artist is supported in this investigation by an all-female pop-up choir.
Rachel Mars is a British performance artist with roots in theater, live performance and comedy. Through her work, she explores the cultural and political structures that shape our society. She has studied humor in all its aspects, the language of eighties pop and politics as well as the science of anger. Mars appeared at The Royal Court, Tate Modern, The Orchard Project, The Barbican, South Bank Center and the Fusebox Festival in Austin.
