Viral, contagious and intriguing
After thirty years of dancing, Brazilian choreographer Marcelo Evelin is worried. How much longer can his deteriorating body take it? And what does dance even mean when your body becomes tired and fragile? Evelin and his company are known for their raw, in-your-face dance experiences, with no regards for the rules and traditions of contemporary dance.
In 'Dança Doente’ (Sick Dance) he presents dance as a post-apocalyptic pathology: the body is infected by the world and dominated by external forces using it up before dumping it. Think of dance as a contagious virus that heralds death, only to affirm life in all its grandeur. A performance about the essence of our being, based on the oeuvre of Tatsumi Hijikata, a pioneer of 'butoh' - the Japanese ‘dance of darkness’.
