The East always exerted an inexplicable attraction on Arco Renz. The German choreographer worked with classical Khmer dancers (‘Crack’), the Vietnam National Ballet and Asian hip hop acrobats (‘Hanoi Stardust'). But in his third solo performance, 'EAST', Renz questions the seemingly obvious contrast between West and East. Are we not all caught up in the same stereotypes? And are our imaginary projections about Asian people and places actually accurate?

For ‘EAST’ dancer and choreographer Arco Renz drew from his personal work and travel experiences in Asia and in Europe. This confrontation leads to a clash between the oriental heritage and western modern dance whereby Renz' movements simultaneously generate recognition and alienation. This effect is reinforced by artist Lawrence Malstaf’s spherical installation, Fujimoto Takayuki’s LED lighting and a live dialogue with two DJs.
