For the second year in a row, Vooruit’s the game is up! festival will welcome artists from around the globe who poke fun at the (often unwritten) rules and codes of the art world. Last year we warned you that ‘You are about to do something you shouldn’t’ and this year’s catchphrase is ‘Art for Sale’.

For an eleven-day period, Vooruit will offer a platform to artists who study the relationship between art and consumerism. From performers questioning their attitude towards show business to musicians committing commercial suicide and media artists embracing market principles.

Art for sale

In 2007, we were pleasantly surprised by artists such as The Yes Men, body artist Stelarc and talented performer Ivana Müller. This year, we’re looking forward to the internationally renowned Superamas exclusively performing their BIG trilogy back-to-back, and upcoming band the Germans jamming with all-round guitar phenomenon Eugene Chadbourne. American street preacher Reverend Billy will bring his crusade against consumerism to Belgium and Frenchman Matthieu Laurette will enlighten us on the subject ‘How to survive for one year without spending a penny’. Visitors are also invited to join in on the fun; apart from enjoying a bunch of free activities, you might also take home a real piece of art! Just try your luck with one of our arcade games.

But maybe not everything is what it seems. Under all the kitsch and bad taste there is a deeper meaning, which we’ll focus on in talks with the artists, a documentation centre and a conference.

ART FOR SALE? TIME FOR A THOROUGH CHECK-UP!

The festival is in the 5 For Students March Top 5
