Eric De Volder (tg Ceremonia) will kick-start the evening with an exclusive opening ceremony.

Flat Earth Society, the anarchistic big band founded by Peter Vermeersch, will be the host in the Theaterzaal and has invited several artists to celebrate 25 years of Vooruit in their own, original way. Music, drama and performance art will be the main ingredients for the dish FES will be serving in the Theaterzaal.

Arne Sierens & Compagnie Cecilia and actress Els Dottermans (NTGent) have promised to present us with some sweet tunes. More music will be provided by Louis Sclavis and the Flemish Puerto Rican Gabriel Rios. Especially for this occasion, Josse De Pauw and Dirk Roofthooft will be performing as a duo and Fred Frith, Rene Lussier & Mauro Pawlowski will be forming a trio. Mauro will also bring music from the Wim Vandekeybus’s dance performance ‘Mountains are made of barking’ out from under the dust, together with Peter Vermeersch. TG STAN and Victoria will also be performing a yet undisclosed act.

Gerda Dendooven and Turkish Ceren Oykut will provide a running commentary on the evening with cartoons and live animation.

In the balzaal we will be seeing several familiar faces that each earned their place into the Vooruit annals. Especially for 25 years of Vooruit, the legendary progrock band Fukkeduk is taking the stage again after a long period of absence. The punk band The Ex is just as legendary and still alive and kicking after a career of 27 years. They will be bringing along a bunch of friends and a special guest, renowned Ethiopian sax player Getatchew Mekuria. Baba Zula, a Turkish band which effortlessly combines traditional street music with electronic elements, will also be bringing along a guest: guitar player Fred Frith.

CONCERTZAAL

THE VIOLENT HUSBANDS (album presentation)

SHORT SETS BY: GABRIEL RIOS / LUC DE VOS / BENT VAN LOOY

We’ll be presenting an evening of homegrown musical talent in the Concertzaal. Four promising bands on the main stage, alternated with short acoustic sets by national heroes. With former members of dEUS, Vive La Fête and Soulwax in their ranks and the fantastic debut album ‘Naked Wheelz’, Soapstarter prove that they are a band worth watching out for. The Bony King of Nowhere will also make it worth your while. With his enchanting songs reminiscent of Bonnie Prince Billy, he won ‘De Beloften 06’, a Ghent rock competition for young musicians, and the Muzikantendag demo competition (the annual musician’s day is held in Ancienne Belgique, Brussels). Jerboa will be bringing the house down with his irresistible mix of funk, rock, hip hop and scratch. Finally, The Violent Husbands will be presenting their debut album.

In between these promising acts, established artists, such as Gabriel Rios, Flip Kowlier and Bent Van Looy, will be performing short acoustic sets.

In the topmost hall of Vooruit, the Domzaal, the performing arts will be taking over the stage. We will be looking back on Vooruit’s rich past, but we will also pay attention to the new wind that is blowing in the world of drama. Established performers as well as new talent will be showing off their talent. Cie de Koe and Elsie De Brouw (NTGent) both will be performing a yet undisclosed act. Alexandra Bachzetsis, Lies Van Borm and Tina Bleuler on the other hand, have already spilled the beans: the trio will be presenting ACT, a short performance in which they will be literally undressing the performing arts. Eva Meyer-Keller provides the most morbid performance of the evening: ‘Death is certain’ brings new meaning to “pottering about with cherries” – just wait and see!

25 years of Vooruit will be showing all the hidden corners, nooks and attics of Vooruit. In rooms with intriguing names such as Mokabon, Brugzaal, Dansstudio and Antiekzolder, we will be offering you a selection of media and performance art.

We will be welcoming national and international artists. French collective Active Suspension will be presenting installations and intimate concerts. Lawrence Malstaf, Tales of Tales and Heine R. Avdal will be setting up their installations in the Vooruit halls, while Julien Maire and Dolores Bouckaert will be performing their latest work in the outmost corners of the building. The Café will be buzzing with the sound of music, namely flamenco, brought to you by Maren Strack, gravity-defying tunes by Johan Lorbeer and the crazy brass band Vooruit met de Kuit.
