Vooruit – together with De Grazer vzw – emerged as the winner among 12 project proposals for the Short Chain Contest by the City of Ghent. Both organizations won € 7500 to implement their project, donated by the deputy mayor of Environment, Climate and Energy, Tine Heyse. On February 3rd all projects will be presented during a networking event.
Keeping the distance between producer and consumer as short as possible
The Aim of the City of Ghent’s Short Chain Contest was to support projects that keep the distance between producer and consumer as short as possible. Deputy mayor Heyse: “‘Creating a more visible, shorter food chain is one of the objectives of the Ghent Food Strategy ‘Gent en Garde’. Inside a short chain we consume locally produced products, reducing the number of links between producer and consumer as much as possible. We also look at the possibilities of the city as a consuming market and we raise awareness about sustainable food among city residents."
Pure Ghent on your plate at Vooruit
Vooruit wants to serve its Café visitors 'pure Ghent' by using as much locally grown and processed food as possible. We will start ‘short chain’ subprojects on a regular basis at the Café such as for example a ‘local day soup’ or a ‘local daily special’. In collaboration with our suppliers and possible new partners we will look for sustainable alternatives.
We serve between 150 and 200 meals at Vooruit each day, without counting the sandwiches. These quantities allow us to guarantee a stable turnover to our suppliers and partners and can motivate them to work on transitioning to sustainable food production.
A concrete example of such a short chain project is the purchase of a ‘Spilvarken’ pig, one of the three city pigs that were raised at the Bijloke over a period of six months. A group of 42 local residents acting as assistant farmers raised the pigs inside a short chain of acknowledged food waste. Together with the initiators of 'Het Spilvarken', the local residents provided an animal friendly and ecologically sound alternative to industrial meat production. Café Vooruit bought one of the three Spilvarken pigs and it was processed into the daily specials and the spaghetti sauce in December.
