The Nature Theater presents the second part of its 10-part project ‘Life &Times’ which intends to tell the entire life story of a woman. She doesn’t experience spectacular things but lives an ordinary life full of recognizable situations: her first love, a summer boyfriend, that first secret cigarette…

Part 1 followed the main character from her birth to her eighth birthday in the form of a highly entertaining 3-hour musical. Vooruit visitor Josie wrote: “A brilliant feat, as wonderful as it is simple.”

Part 2 focuses on her teenage years and how it feels to be an outsider and an insider.

Scott’s South Pole expeditions. The viewer can follow in Raleigh’s footsteps and thereby becomes the main character. The piece confronts us with questions about our consciousness: who are we? What is the self? Can we trust our body as an intermediary between reality and ourselves? Directors Eric Joris and Stef De Paepe and author Peter Verhelst draw comparisons between the exploration of our mind and Scott’s dramatic second South Pole expedition.

De Silver Horse Award wil Turkse producers, regisseurs, muzikanten, acteurs en actrices die actief zijn in Europa voor het voetlicht plaatsen.

Op deze uitreiking van de Silver Horse Film en Muziek Awards wisselen interviews, filmfragmenten en korte concerten elkaar af. Alles wordt aan elkaar gepraat door gedreven performers en de prijzen worden uitgereikt door prominente figuren uit de politieke en kunstenaarswereld. De dagen voorafgaand aan de uitreiking worden een aantal films van genomineerden vertoond.

Hout en koper, slaan en blazen, zwart en blank: op deze zestiende eindproductie van de Gentse percussieschool Basboot worden weer eens uitersten verzoent. Slaan, dat gebeurt op trommels, balafoons, cymbalen en klankschalen en blazen, daar zijn de trombones voor.

Niet alleen de cursisten en docenten van de Basboot treden op, maar ook The Tromboneyard, een band met zeven jonge trombonisten van de Academie voor Podiumkunsten. Onze speciale gasten Peter Delannoye (Brussels Jazz Orchestra, El Tattoo Del Tigre, Lady Linn…) en Frederik Heirman (Baloji, Bert Joris, Jef Neve trio…) bazuinen het graag rond en dat is maar goed ook, want de Basbootdocenten weten dan weer wat tamtam maken is.

Transitie: over de wereld van morgen en hoe die vandaag begint
Voedselteams, stadslandbouw, coöperatieve vormen van landbouw, … In Gent gaan veel geëngageerde individuen en organisaties op zoek naar nieuwe manieren om met elkaar en onze omgeving om te gaan. Stuk voor stuk zijn het kleine initiatieven en ondernemingen die elk op hun manier uiting geven aan een grotere beweging. Welke creatieve ideeën kunnen er niet allemaal ontstaan als je al deze mensen samenbrengt?

Dat willen DOK en Vooruit ontdekken! Daarom nodigen we je op 7 juni uit om te dromen over wat we samen zouden kunnen realiseren in deze stad.

Hoe ziet de avond eruit?
Je bent welkom vanaf 18u voor een etentje op DOK. Daarna start een gezamenlijke brainstorm onder leiding van Jim Baeten, ervaringsdeskundige in het begeleiden van transitieprocessen. Bedoeling is vooral om mensen en hun ideeën in contact te brengen met andere gelijkgestemden. Samen willen we onderzoeken hoe we onze duurzame manieren om met voeding om te gaan, verder kunnen ontwikkelen. We hopen uiteindelijk tot een tweetal projecten te komen die we op termijn in Gent zouden kunnen realiseren.

Koks en deskundigen doen tijdens deze workshop allerlei alternatieve manieren uit de doeken waarop je etenswaren kan bewaren en tonen hoe je ze langer lekker en gezond kan houden. Young actor Titus De Voogdt has been playing with Arne Sierens’s Cie Cecilia for years, but felt the time was ripe to create his own work. With fellow actor and theatre maker Johan Heldenbergh as his coach, De Voogdt now presents his first piece. The duo gives it their all on stage, in a quest for pure language and gripping images. We already witnessed their chemistry in the film ‘Steve+Sky’ and other pieces by Cie Cecilia such as ‘Trouwfeesten en processen’ and ‘Maria Eeuwigdurende Bijstand’. Spawned from the hearts and minds of De Voogdt and Heldenbergh, ‘Vorst-Forest’ promises to have a rough edge, but a tender centre.

La Sera, dat is het project van Katy Goodman, één derde van de band Vivian Girls. Humo schreef over hun album dat het een staaltje ”girl group magic” was met “een handvol in al hun eenvoud briljante songs”, maar Goodman bewijst als La Sera dat het ze het alleen minstens even goed kan.

Zelf noemt ze haar muziek wel eens “break-up pop”, maar dan wel voor “the best kinds of break-ups”: opzwepende en lichtvoetige rock, maar ook wel een beetje bitter. Haar debuut uit 2011 werd door muzieksite Pitchfork wel catchy bevonden, maar met te weinig identiteit. Op nieuweling ‘Sees The Light’ zet La Sera dat echter helemaal recht:

”The elegant, almost ethereal singing contrasts with the fuzzy distortion in a way that’s infectious and unique. (...) Every song on Sees the Light is exquisitely crafted and overflowing with personality. It’s a record so enjoyable and expertly sequenced that it demands repeat listens before it’s even over. But most importantly, it shows Katy Goodman can translate what she brings to Vivian Girls into top-shelf songwriting.” (Pitchfork Media)

Mister M & One87 begonnen 12 jaar geleden met een eenvoudig concept en dat was: een Drum ‘n’ Bass event van de grootste kwaliteit opstarten. Star Warz ontpopte zich al gauw tot één van de beste Drum ‘n’ Bass events ter wereld. Daar zorgden de overweldigende line-ups, het mooie artwork, de klassevolle locatie en geluidssystemen van de bovenste plank voor. Star Warz had de laatste jaren dan ook de eer verschillende label nights te mogen hosten van hoog aangeschreven labels als Critical Records, Shogun Audio, (15 Years of) Metalheadz, (15 Years of) Renegade Hardware en vele anderen. Deze keer brengen ze jullie een 100% old skool editie, aangevoerd door Metalheadz honcho Goldie en een heleboel aan hem gelinkte artiesten.

Die artiesten waarmee het in de jaren ’90 allemaal begon en die verantwoordelijk zijn voor het opbouwen van de Drum ‘n’ Bass scene zoals we die vandaag kennen, zullen op devolgende editie van Star Warz aanwezig zijn om die fantastische sfeer van de magische begindagen terug te brengen.

We weten allemaal dat Goldie geen vreemde is op Star Warz aangezien wij de uitverkoren party waren om zijn ‘15 Years of Metalheadz’ tour te lanceren. Hij heeft veel respect voor onze parties en publiek, net zoals wij dat voor hem hebben. Drum ‘n’ Bass zou nooit hetzelfde geweest zijn zonder zijn invloeden en de vele, getalenteerde artiesten die hij hielp om door te breken. Wie beter konden we dan ook vragen om 100% old skool editie aan te voeren dan hem!

Van de geboorte van Drum ‘n’ Bass tot waar die staat vandaag, doorheen de verschillende evoluties van rave tot hardcore, jungle-techno tot tech-step, van UK based, tot een globaal fenomeen, ook Doc Scott heeft het allemaal gezien en was de hele rit actief in de scene. Hij richtte samen met Goldie Metalheadz op en het was Goldie die hem zijn bijnaam ‘King of the Rollerz’ gaf. En uiteraard is er ook nog zijn label 31 Records, ijzersterk sinds 1996 tot vandaag.

En ook Storm is altijd één van de meest invloedrijke dj’s binnen Drum ‘n’ Bass geweest, gekend voor haar strakke mixen en uitmuntende selecties. Liefdevol uitgeroepen tot ‘First Lady of Drum ‘n’ Bass,’ vertegenwoordigt ze Metalheadz op hun residenties, label nights en tours, naast haar vele solo gigs. Ze is van bij de start actief bij het label en haar invloed in het opbouwen van de reputatie van Metalheadz is groot en fundamenteel.

Bailey is dan weer een multi award winnende radio presentator voor BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 1Xtra en een langdurige DJ voor Metalheadz. Hij bracht tracks uit op en heleboel labels waaronder uiteraard Metalheadz maar ook C.I.A, Roni Size’s Full Cycle en A Guy Called Gerald’s Protechshon. Bailey’s grootste passie is om de best mogelijke DJ te zijn die het hele gamma binnen Drum ‘n’ Bass bestrijkt, wat hem bookings over de hele wereld heeft opgeleverd.

Met meer dan 15 jaar ervaring sinds zijn debuut, blijft ook Spirit het drukker dan ooit hebben en staat hij nog steeds ‘at the top his game’. Ook hij wist zich te vestigen als één van ’s werelds meest vooraanstaande Drum ‘n’ Bass producers. Spirit werkt op dit moment aan zijn tweede album, heeft tracks voor CIA in het vooruitzicht en zal opnieuw de studio induiken met Digital, naast zijn werk voor zijn eigen label Inneractive inclusief een ’10 year anniversary’ compilatie.

Randall zijn stijl werd altijd als ‘fluid’ omschreven en hoewel dat wellicht nooit zal veranderen, zijn er de laatste jaren toch veranderingen in zijn selecties merkbaar met meer nadruk op de donkere flavas dan vroeger. Dit wordt nog het best geïllustreerd door zijn transformative van AWOL resident naar vaste Metalheadz dj. Met zijn labels ‘Mac II Recordings’ en ‘Step back sessions’, zorgt Randall er voor dat hij ook als producer bekend wordt, naast zijn legendarische status als DJ.

En nog zo’n naam die synonym staat met Drum ‘n’ Bass is DJ Lee, aangezien ook zijn invloed terugreikt tot de prille begindagen. Zijn producties vonden hun weg naar gerespecteerde labels als Metalheadz, 31 Records en zijn eigen Atlas Recordings imprint. Zijn blakende reputatie als een echte ‘dj’s dj’, make nook van hem één van de meest bekende en gerespecteerde figuren in de industrie.

Promotor One87 viert dit jaar ook al zijn 20ste verjaardag als dj. en voor deze speciale gelegenheid zal hij exclusief nog eens een team vormen met zijn old time partner Daviz, met wie hij jaren lang de Millennium Kru vormde, old skool indeed!

Uit Nederland komt ook nog John Doe van het Counter Intelligence label overgewaaid en verwacht je er maar aan om de hele nacht opgehypt te worden tot vele hoogtepunten door MC’s GQ en Justyce. Deze avond wordt zeker en vast historisch, zorg ervoor dat je erbij bent.

Kozzmozz staat voor pure en kwalitatieve techno, jullie gebracht door de ‘crème de la crème’ van de internationale techno top. Soliede line-ups, onberispelijke producties, een prachtige venue en het beste techno publiek dat een artiest zich mag wensen, dat is Kozzmozz. Als je aanwezig was op één van de laatste edities dan weet je wat we bedoelen. Als dit je eerste bezoek aan Kozzmozz wordt, wees erop voorbereid om van je sokken geblazen te worden.

Het spel is gespeeld en de namen voor devolgende editie zijn gekend ...

Niemand minder dan Technasia voert de line-up aan. Het is een hele tijd geleden dat we Charles Siegling nog eens op bezoek hadden en zowel hij als wij zijn heel gelukkig dat het weer zo ver is. Hij mag deze zomer dan wel in Ibiza voor Cadenza spelen, maak je geen zorgen, hij weet dat de Kozzmozz crowd houdt van beats met een bang en weet deze uiteraard ook nog steeds perfect te brengen. Hij reist al 13 jaar de wereld rond als één van de grote spelers in de techno-scene en zijn Sino label wordt algemeen beschouwd als een uiterst kwalitatief label dat een hele reeks integere artiesten vertegenwoordigt.

Uit London en ook al meer dan 15 jaar actief in de business, komt James Ruskin. Hij staat gekend als één van de belangrijkste artiesten in de Britse elektronische muziek. Met zijn releases op Blueprint, Coda en Tresor, zette hij nieuwe standaarden op het vlak van productie-technieken en hij heeft een uitstekende wereldwijde reputatie. James´ DJ talent en vele producties van de bovenste plank, zowel oude als nieuwe, leverden hem gigs op over de hele wereld. Hij speelde al in ’s werelds beste venues, als La Real (Spanje), Tresor & Berghain (Berlijn) en U60311 (Frankfurt), om er maar enkele te noemen. Zijn laatste album “The Dash” werd op Tresor gereleased in 2008. Samen met Regis vormt hij ook het brilliante O/V/R project.

Uit Berlijns leidinggevende techno club Berghain, verwelkomen we Marcel Fengler die al sinds de jaren ’90 underground techno parties organiseert met Marcel Dettmann. Daarna werd hij resident in Tresor maar verhuisde naar Berghain in 2004. Productiegewijs doet hij nooit toegevingen en zijn nummers zijn puur techno genot. Zijn releases op Ostgut Ton worden door velen de hemel ingeprezen en versterken zijn positie van vooruitstrevende en innovatieve producer. Meer recent vind je van hem ook werk op Luke Slater’s label Mote Evolver en zette hij zijn eigen label op, Index Marcel Fengler. Daarnaast leverde ook hij een bijdrage aan de Berghain mix-compilaties met een essentiële dj-mix voor het 5de volume.

Pure, kwalitatieve techno van begin tot eind van 3 artiesten met een stevige reputatie die ons de meest innovatieve sounds van vandaag zullen brengen. Zij krijgen de volle support van residents Kr!z and Spacid die de crowd aan het shaken krijgen op een manier dat alleen residents dat kunnen ! Bereid je voor op nog een ‘spaced out Kozzmozz voyage and lift off’ !

De Nederlandse schrijver Arnon Grunberg stelt zijn nieuwste roman ‘De man zonder ziekte’ voor.

Na een inleiding van uitgever-schrijver Vic van de Reijt, doet Humo-journalist Marc Schaevers een interview met Gunberg. De schrijver zal nadien ook signeren aan de boekenstand.

In ‘De man zonder ziekte’ reist een jonge Zwitserse architect af naar Bagdad om een nieuw operagebouw te ontwerpen. Een man die ervan overtuigd is dat een architect het leven van de mens mooier en makkelijker moet maken.

”Meer nog dan zijn Indiase uiterlijk – het wekte weleens verwarring, een keer had een man in een café over het gele gevaar gesproken en daarbij nadrukkelijk Samarendra’s kant uitgekeken – was dit de kern van zijn identiteit: het gebrek aan ziekte. Hij had geen rolstoel nodig, geen permanente verzorging, hij kon lopen. Zo was hij eerst het kind geweest, vervolgens de jongen en nu de man zonder ziekte; meer dan wat dan ook was hij gezond, zowel geestelijk als lichamelijk.”

Today, almost every electronic music genre can be seen and heard at the festival. 10 Days Off has become a landmark in the international electronic music scene. The festival has its own character and style, built on its pioneering decisive choice for programming electronic music. The duration (10 days), location (indoor, in the beloved beautiful building of the Vooruit Arts Centre) and the period (during the Ghent City Festivities) add a bunch of extras to the festival and the experience for its visitors.
At 10 Days Off, innovating contemporary artists come with timeless established top artists and talented young Belgian artists. The line-up is adventurous, attractive, challenging and fresh. Made for clubbers, but also giving guidance to new discoveries and giving chances to new genres and evolutions.

This year, the festival highlights the influence, evolution and mutation of dubstep, one of the most influential and populair genres that has emerged. The club revival of disco is another undeniable evolution that is supported and programmed by 10 Days Off this year. Also, there are exciting times ahead for three other genres, as elements from house and techno are being put together with modern electro in a cohesive and original way.
Artists on 10 Days Off perform live, semi-live or as dj’s. The ongoing innovations of hard and software and it’s implementations in performances, make it difficult to make a real distinction here. Therefore, artists are being announced the way they prefer.

Ant Hampton is geen onbekende meer in Vooruit sinds hij op het podiumfestival ‘the game is up!’ in 2011 zijn “autoteatro” introduceerde in Gent. Toen plaatste hij jou, de toeschouwer, in het midden van de actie: met een onbekende tegenspeler op een bankje in de stad, in de Gentse boekentoren of in het Vooruitcafé. Telkens maakte je zelf de performance door de instructies te volgen die je via je koptelefoon ingefluisterd kreeg.

Met ‘Ok Ok’ gaat Hampton op hetzelfde elan verder: met 4 neem je plaats aan een tafel in het Vooruitgebouw om samen een kleine komedie te spelen. Niet via een stem in je oortjes deze keer, maar door een script te volgen waarop jouw tekst in kleur is aangeduid. Maak je geen zorgen, acteerervaring heb je niet nodig. De tekst reflecteert immers zodanig de onzekerheid die iemand voelt wanneer die iets luidop moet lezen, dat alles als vanzelf op z’n plaats valt. Zo wordt langzaam naar een grappig en verrassend einde toegewerkt.

Kris Verdonck / A Two Dogs Company

Not only is Kris Verdonck a household name at Vooruit, he has also become one of the most influential and inspiring figures in contemporary performing arts. ‘I/II/III/IIII’ saw four female dancers performing a choreography while suspended from a carousel, ‘Exit’ literally tried to rock the audience to sleep, and ‘K, a Society’, took you on a trip past several installations set up throughout the Vooruit building. Whereas these creations heavily drew on the work of Franz Kafka, Verdonck now turns to German author Heiner Müller for inspiration.

During his lifetime, Müller (1929-1995) witnessed fascism, communism and capitalism up close. He was a privileged witness to the disintegration of Germany and its reunification many years later. Apart from good and evil, the Other is also a recurrent theme in his work. In M, a Reflection, Verdonck tackles this theme by duplicating the protagonist. What ensues is dialogue and conflict between the two. Actor Johan Leysen is juxtaposed with his doppelganger – a high-tech hologram – and embodies the contrast between reality and fiction. Leysen will also star in Guy Cassiers’s De Misdaad later this season.

On the 14th of April 2012, it will have been exactly 100 years since the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank. The maiden trip of the fated ship has become an iconic source of inspiration ever since. “The Titanic is unsinkable, sinking unthinkable.” Although we are aware that the unsinkable ship effectively sank, we do not seem to have learnt our lesson. Now the polar caps, which would supposedly never melt, are melting. Music ensembles Flat Earth Society, LOD and Champ d’Action will present two concerts under the name Iceberg.

FLAT EARTH SOCIETY – BOOT & BERG
During the first concert, Flat Earth Society – a renowned Flemish big band – will perform a new composition by Peter Vermeersch for soprano Rolande Van der Paal and orchestra. The lyrics were written by Josse De Pauw, who takes the stage as the narrator. The vocals tell us the story of the iceberg, which chronicles its fate. Graphic designer Gert Dooreman provides a projection reflecting the atmosphere of the concert.

LOD & CHAMP D’ACTION – THE SINKING OF THE TITANIC
After the first concert, Champ d’Action will perform a slowly sinking epilogue in the form of The Sinking of the Titanic, a legendary composition by Gavin Bryars. Bryars was inspired by two things when writing his composition: Autumn, the piece performed by the Titanic orchestra as the boat sank, and the fact that they continued playing until the very end. Bryars tried to imagine what the band must have sounded like under water. The hymns, Morse code and aquatic atmosphere are given the uncompromising Champ d’Action treatment. And then everything is calm. Goodbye ship, goodbye iceberg.

In the Netherlands, playwright Laura Van Dolron is something of a phenomenon. Her subdued, personal, and honest pieces even won her a nomination for the Theaterfestival.

In Welk stuk? two real-life politicians take the stage. After all, they might have more experience with cameras and one-liners than actors. Van Dolron does not have any prior knowledge of their identity, their political conviction and agenda, but she directs them as if they were actors and puts words in their mouths. Whether we’ll find two Flemish politicians willing to participate in this piece in the countdown to the local elections is still a mystery. Names will be announced later.

Sex! Trash! Violence!

This performance sees Guitarist Marc Ribot – most well-known for his work with Tom Waits, Elvis Costello and John Zorn – delve into film noir soundtracks from the forties and fifties. Ribot also incorporates influences from the New York No Wave scene, which drew heavily on the genre. The selected material consists of classic arrangements such as Mancini’s Touch of Evil, André Previn’s Scene of the Crime, and Roy Budd’s Get Carter, as well as music by John Lurie’s Lounge Lizards, John Zorn, and new material by Ribot himself.

For this occasion, the guitar genius has surrounded himself with a selection of Belgian musicians, including seasoned musicians such as Bart Maris (Flat Earth Society) and Michel Massot (Mâäk’s Spirit) and up-and-coming talent such as Joachim Badenhorst (Han Bennink Trio), Benjamin Glorieux (Champ d’action) and Lander Gyselinck (Kris Defoort Trio). One of the most influential dance performances of the 21st century

Lucinda Childs is one of the biggest names in dance history. This contemporary version of DANCE is an adaptation of the 1979 original. The choreography consists of three parts: the first and last part are performed by four men and four women, and the middle part is a solo performance by a female dancer. Legendary composer Philip Glass’s minimalist yet complex score is a perfect match for Childs’s choreography. Artist Sol LeWitt – another kindred spirit – contributed to the performance in the form of a black and white film of four dancers performing Childs’s choreography which is projected onto the scene. The dancers on stage and the video move simultaneously, creating an amazing performance. It is not often that three art forms meet as beautifully as they do in DANCE.

After the Red Herring premiere, Flemish magazine Knack wrote a rave review, saying it was a feast for “adventurous viewers who enjoy seeing tomorrow’s playwrights at work”. De Morgen thought the performance was “hilarious and incredibly convincing”.

You might remember Peeters from his work with Superamas and Hans Bryssinck. In Red Herring, however, he takes the stage alone. A red herring is a term used in the TV and film industry to signify an element that draws attention from the central issue. Peeters uses clever sound effects to draw you into an espionage comedy. He originally intended to make a thriller, but this proved quite impossible for someone who suffers from all sorts of fears and phobias, including mysophobia. Needless to say, it makes the show all the more entertaining.

A documentary on Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker of Belgian dance company Rosas and the production process of Rain.

On the 25th of May 2011, the renowned Paris Opera Ballet performed Rain, their first choreography by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.

Olivia Rochette en Gerard-Jan Claes filmed the production process from the auditions to the premiere. The documentary focuses on the way De Keersmaeker and her team of dancers try to introduce the classically trained ballet dancers to the Rosas repertoire. The rigidity of ballet makes room for the mathematical rhythm of Rain, which holds a magnitude of emotional layers. A poetic documentary about searching, watching and questioning within the walls of the oft-oppressing opera building.

French chanteuse Mireille Mathieu is best remembered for hit songs such as Une Femme Amoureuse and Acropolis Adieu. Mireilles is a free mini musical performed by Nadia Schnock in the Vooruit Café. The leitmotiv is the story of a tragic love, told through Mathieu’s songs and performed by two female and one male lookalike. It’s a strange sight to see the identical, iconic and almost asexual singers confronted with the hidden passion of Mathieu’s lyrics.

Brussels-based artist Nadia Schnock works as a costume designer for deepblue. She also acts and creates her own shows, which often walk a fine line between performance art, installation art, theatre and visual art.

We just can’t get enough of the stage adaptation of Sprakeloos, Tom Lanoye’s masterpiece. The “butcher’s son with glasses” – as he described himself in his debut novel – previously performed the monologue at Vooruit to a succession of standing ovations. If you missed it then, you’ll get another chance this season. Still not convinced? Humo called the novel “an overwhelming sample of Lanoye’s literary prowess”. De Tijd situated Sprakeloos “up there with the great works of Claus and Boon” and De Standaard called him “a great author at the top of his ability”. De Standaard also agreed that the live performance by the author himself adds a depth to the original story. Come and see Lanoye, a born performer, pay a passionate, moving tribute to his deceased mother.

After the successful adaptation of the first two parts of the literary masterpiece The Man without Qualities by Guy Cassiers and Het Toneelhuis, they will present the third and final part this season. Author Yves Petri – who won the Libris Prize for Literature with De Maagd Marino – rejected the idea of a straightforward adaptation. Instead he combined elements from Musil’s biography with the novel. The result is a mash-up of Musil and his beloved Herma’s love life and the story of Moosbrugger and a prostitute. We know that Moosbrugger is responsible for the death of the prostitute, but what role did Musil play in the death of Herma? De Misdaad is an exciting duet of actress and musician Liesa Van der Aa and actor Johan Leysen – who also stars in M, a reflection by Kris Verdonck this season.

French performer Jérôme Bel is known for his choreographies based on the lives and careers of the dancers he creates them for. Talking about his concept in Brussel Nieuws, Bel said, “A few years ago I realized that the discourse on dance was entirely dominated by choreographers and critics. Nobody ever asks the dancer’s opinion, while I thought this might be interesting. (…) I started out from the simple idea of letting the dancer talk about his work in layman’s terms while giving a few examples with dance fragments. The dancer is the only person who can both dance and explain the performance. Critics can’t dance and choreographers usually can’t either.”

This is the fifth part in Bel’s series of biographical choreographies. It follows the life of dancer Cédric Andrieux, who will perform the choreography himself. It offers an introspective and anecdotic look at his career, from his training at the Parisian Conservatoire to his experiences with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in New York and renowned choreographers such as Trisha Brown and William Forsythe.

IFA Y XANGO
In Brazilian and Caribbean religions, Ifa means wisdom and knowledge and Xango is the god of lightning, fire and dance. Ifa y Xango is the musical harmony of the two. This young septet won the 2011 Jong Jazztalent Gent competition and was picked up by influential StuBru DJ Lefto, who chose one of their songs as the opening track of his Summer Edition Mix. The ensemble connects Afro-Latino influences with their own background in jazz, rock, improvisation, and classical music with sweltering vivacity.

Every weekday, you can follow the adventures of ‘meneer Afzal’ (mister Afzal) on the Klara radio show Babel. The character, created by playwright and author Pieter De Buyser, who could previously be seen at Vooruit with De Muur, undergoes a series of incredible changes. When he gets stuck between a window, he stretches his ear to a size of 40 by 70 cm. As a result, his senses are heightened and he starts using the flap as a scarf. What follows is a succession of weird situations. Afzal meets bizarre creatures, including a monster that floods everything with its tears, a disgruntled eel with overactive mirror neurons, a disabled peacock specializing in language legislation, a spirited girl with a rotting ankle, and the worshipped Afkalfkalf.

The comical and grotesque audio drama has been adapted for the stage, narrated by Josse De Pauw and with music by Kris Defoort.

BILLY HART QUARTET
Although he is well over 70, Billy Hart is still passionate about playing the drums. He was a member of the Charles Lloyd Quartet for over ten years, but will now perform at Vooruit with his own quartet. Although the ensemble was originally named after its pianist, Ethan Iverson – known for his work with The Bad Plus zie p. …) – the band members felt that the legendary drummer deserved some recognition and renamed the band after him. Quartet was included in the top ten records of 2006 by The New York Times. All Our Reasons, the follow-up album, was released earlier this year.

ATOMIC
Atomic was founded to prove that not all Scandivian bands are melancholy and ethereal. The band’s concerts are overwhelmingly explosive, with influences from improvisation, free jazz and rock. Band members include Paal Nillsen-Love (a member of Hairy Bones, alongside Peter Brötzmann) and brilliant pianist Håvard Wiik.

JOACHIM BADENHORST SOLO
Saxophone and clarinet player Joachim Badenhort presently divides his time between Brooklyn and Antwerp, but he incorporates influences from all over the world in his music. With Mogil he reproduces Icelandic music, in the Ploug/Pettersen/Badenhorst trio he joins forces with two Danes, he is a member of Dutch musician Han Bennink’s trio, and performs with a bunch of Irishmen in Red Rocket. At Vooruit he will be performing solo.

CHRISTIAN WALLUMRØD ENSEMBLE
Norwegian composer and pianist Christian Wallumrød mixes baroque music and Scandinavian folk with the minimalist universe of Morton Feldman and John Cage. Two years ago, the ensemble released Fabula Suite Lugano on ECM Records to rave reviews. At this concert, they will introduce the audience to their new album. The Guardian described one of their concerts as a “slow-building gig (…) a quietly overwhelming experience.”

Jazz Plays Europe is an international network promoting the exchange of jazz musicians and bands across six European countries. In the framework of this project, the JazzLabSeries from Belgium has set up collaborations with like-minded programmers in France, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland and Slovakia. Their purpose? Giving bands the chance to play on foreign soil and introducing talented musicians from new jazz scenes to each other and the audience. When Renaissance painters mastered the art of perspective, they used it to organize and frame the world. Centuries later, we are flooded by digital images that essentially do the same. They determine and manipulate our view of reality. Superamas bring together real people, actors, 3D images, and avatars in a shiny, clever, and sexy performance.

French-Austrian performance collective Superamas became a favourite of the Vooruit audience with the BIG trilogy, which slams reality TV, showbiz, and entertainment. Comedy, glamour, and a hint of voyeurism are the main ingredients of their work. In the early eighties, Luna Twist wrote Belgian music history with a unique mix of catchy rock, sequencers and a hint of James Brown. Their solid live reputation earned them 300 gigs all over the Benelux, before they eventually split in 1983 and pursued their respective solo careers. The band was infused new life in the summer of 2008. A string of remarkable concerts made it clear that the magic hadn’t been lost and the band has continued to perform ever since.

The Other is a basic concept of philosphy. After 9/11, however, the Other has often come to signify Muslims. How clichéd is our view on them? And how clichéd is their view on us? Dutch-Swiss playwright Yan Duyvendak and Egyptian artist Omar Ghayatt decide to find out. In eleven scenes, Duyvendak and Ghayatt tell us the story of East meets West, and more importantly, of two people and their similarities and differences. At the start of the show, the artists present eleven themes to the audience. The audience then chooses five fragments they want to see.

“Because every night is different, the reaction of the audience varies greatly. Some nights are very calm and serene, sometimes there are serious debates, and sometimes people walk out. In Geneva nobody voted for the poetic fragment, in Paris people were irked by religion, and in Bordeaux the audience stayed for an hour after the show.” – Yan Duyvendak

Pianist Jef Neve is a busy man. He was part of the Oscar and Golden Globe-winning soundtrack of The Artist alongside the Brussels Jazz Orchestra and the Brussels Philharmonic. For his new album, Sons of the New World, he drew inspiration from topical issues such as the Pukkelpop drama, the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the Arab Spring, and so on. Jef Neve believes that “the compositions send out a message of hope, a naïve form of positivism that believes that the good in people will come out in situations of distress.” To convey this sentiment, the Jef Neve Trio will be accompanied by five horns.

Some girls like the wrong kind of men. Laura van Dolron thinks she likes the wrong kind of philosophers. Take Jean-Paul Sartre, the founder of existentialism. According to van Dolron, he has made us all depressed by claiming that life is pointless. High time he apologizes, she thinks.

The original title of the play was Sartre says sorry after Laura shoutsat him for 40 minutes, blaiming him for the fact that all her friends are almost 40, covered in wrinkles and still don’t have children or a family. Seeing this was a bit long, she shortened it to Sartre zegt Sorry (Sartre says sorry). The piece is a cross between stand-up comedy and philosophy, and is light yet poignant. De Standaard called it “a marvel”. In 2011 the piece was picked up for the Theaterfestival, which makes a selection of the best shows of the season.

Painting Notes in the Air is the result of a meeting between saxophist Dave Liebman and jazz pianist and composer Jean-Marie Machado. After collaborating on Camiando in 2007, the duo continued working together. ”Painting Notes in the Air” was conceived by Liebman as a tribute to Machado. During their tour, they will be accompanied by the classical string quartet Psophos and American bugle player Claus Stötter, making room for a unique cross-pollination between classical music and jazz. A rare combination that works wonderfully well.

Looking for philosophical and spiritual answers, she retreated to Thailand, visited a recluse in Spain, met Palestinians in Jerusalem, and took a course in turning anger into love in the Netherlands. The result is an inimitable and incredible stream of thoughts, which is critical, razor-sharp, clever, and witty. Her passion and honesty will have you hanging on her every word. De Beren Gieren became the house band of Vooruit in 2012. Pianist Fulco Ottervanger and his band will regularly perform at Vooruit in all shapes and constellations. They intend to perform with some of their greatest examples. In April they played with cello player Ernst Reijseger, and in December they will get on stage with Louis Sclavis. Later on in the season they will present their own version of Schubert’s Trout Quintet.

The French master of the saxophone and clarinet will also play a set with his own Atlas Trio. Their new album was released on ECM in the spring. The trio combines Sclavis’s saxophone with the dexterity of pianist Moussay and the groove of guitarist Coronado. With the Atlas Trio, Sclavis wants to continue along the path of 2009’s critically praised Lost on the Way, on which he returns to the basics, leaving room for minimalism as well as rage.

“Once upon a time, there was a kingdom made of ancient objects and faded glory, founded by a man to populate his solitude. But it was not long before madness took over.” With these words, we are introduced to the universe of Le Soir des Monstres, a circus performance which takes the audience on a trip to a dark, magical world reminiscent of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands. At the beginning of the performance, we see Etienne Saglio make juggling balls from wire. Suddenly, they get wings and escape. What follows is a magical performance from beginning to end. The performance is lifted to a higher level thanks to the impressive lighting design and the intriguing soundtrack by Belgian-German piano-electronica duo Swod.

Etienne Saglio is one of the most promising circus artists of the moment. He started juggling at age six. He was trained at several renowned circus academies and wowed the crowds with Le Soir des Monstres, his debut performance.

Apart from their work with Flat Earth Society, Peter Vandenberghe, Kristof Roseeuw and Teun Verbruggen have a side project called Too Noisy Fish. Music website Kwadratuur thought their album was “Rebellious, boisterous, bold, and poetic. Fast Easy Stick by Too Noisy Fish is one the most exciting albums of the year. Their rebellious brand of jazz always sounds fresh and spontaneous and seems to be played by an entire battalion of musicians. Fast Easy Slick’s never-ending supply of ideas, rich vocabulary and hyperactive style make it into a diamond in the rough that will keep surprising the listener.”

ACTUUM
Young French jazz quartet Actuum is taking the European jazz scene by storm. In 2010, they won the European Keep an Eye Jazz Award for best band and best composition. Actuum breaks all the rules and creates chaos. Their songs are daring and energetic yet always elegant, and form the ideal soundtrack to these uncertain times. Charles Mingus and George Russell would be proud.

Blood, naked flesh and drag queens. X-on is not your average show. The piece starts with a meeting between a couple of tourists and a museum guard. The scene seems mundane, but suddenly shots are fired and all hell breaks loose. It’s the start of an extraordinary performance.

The piece revolves around The Fitting Pieces, sculptures by Austrian artist Franz West, who recently won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale. West wraps everyday objects in gauze and plaster and invites visitors to touch them and use them. West provides a few replicas so the performers can manipulate the sculptures at will.

Bulgarian artist Dimchev is known for his extremely visual work. De Morgen described X-on as “a work of unparalleled radicalism”, De Standaard thought Dimchev’s talent lies in his “unique, strange imagination and impressive body language and voice”.

How can you turn outrage into action? Italian company Motus tries to find out and unearths stage classic Antigone. While developing the play in Greece, the country hit rock bottom as a 15-year-old boy called Alexis was killed during the financial crisis and the ensuing riots. The incident aggravated the already dire situation and lead to widespread protests among all layers of the Greek population. Motus decided to change their course and turned their attention to protest and revolution instead.

A year after Alexis was killed in 2008, Motus pays an overdue visit to the place where he died. Or is it never too late for action? Alexis, a Greek Tragedy is a hard-hitting piece that leaves you with a heavy conscience.

Codice Ivan is a young Italian company consisting of three playwrights. In 2009, they received the Premio Scenario, a renowned Italian stage prize, for their debut performance Pink, Me & The Roses. GMGS_What the hell is happiness focuses on the ultimate goal of man: happiness. But does anyone know what happiness really is and where to find it? In their quest, Codice Ivan uncovers the connection between a T-shirt and a fridge. Madonna also makes an appearance as the stage slowly fills up with protest signs and chalk drawings. In the end, the piece hopes to find an answer to how we should live our lives.

During their stay in Ghent, Codice Ivan will also perform Tank-Talk, a street performance they describe as a “project for collective urban action”. The piece is based on the legendary Tank Man, the anonymous man who stood in front of a column of tanks in Tienanmen Square in 1989 to prevent the forcible removal of the protesters. The images travelled the world and Tank Man achieved widespread recognition. Codice Ivan will try to stop motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians and enter into debate with them. Everyone is free to participate.

20th edition of the renowned festival that celebrates love and literature

To mark its 20th anniversary, Behoud de Begeerte will organize a special edition focusing entirely on Hugo Claus, one of the greatest Belgian authors of all time. As it happens, 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the publication of Het Verdriet van België (translated as The Sorrow of Belgium), and the fifth anniversary of Claus’s death. Prominent authors and actors will pay tribute to Claus, and as always, love. The audience will also be treated to a generous serving of photos and videos from the archives.

The Artificial Nature Project is the final instalment in a series of performances by choreographer Mette Ingvartsen focusing on observation and sensations in nature. She fictionalizes and choreographs natural phenomena. 2009’s Evaporated Landscapes revolved entirely around bubbles, foam, mist, light and sound. Actors were nowhere to be seen. In The Artificial Nature Project, dancers interact with inanimate objects. But once again, the objects take over and dominate the humans.

Debris flies through the air, the landscape changes continuously, and a confetti storm rages across the scene as the stage slowly gets covered with all sorts of thin, thick, heavy, light, big, small, fragile and sturdy objects. Slowly, the dancers construct a body from these objects. The body is no longer human, but a large flying mass. The result is a succession of fascinating images that washes over the audience at breakneck speed.

The Magic of Spectacular Theater is a cross between musical comedy, a documentary and a magic show. Kurdian is inspired by the occult, paranormal and illusionism. While mediums and the like claim that what they do is real, illusionism explicitly revolves around make-believe. However, they are both based on the proposition that there’s more to life than meets the eye.

Can we stretch the boundaries of what is humanly possible? Kurdian accepts the challenge and worked with a real illusionist during the production of this show. Teleportation, attempts at flying, props such as trick boxes or a fiery cage, you will see them all during this performance. The set was designed by Philippe Quesne – who you might remember from La mélancolie des dragons – who will present his new piece later on this season.

Dancer Mette Ingvartsen – a former member of P.A.R.T.S. – is known for her explicitly physical work. 2008’s In the air was a choreography for two on the trampoline. All the way out here is a powerful performance with and about vocal expression. Together with actor Guillem Mont de Palol, Ingvartsen pushes her voice to the limit. It is a way of expressing her feelings, from fragile modesty to ecstatic enthusiasm and extreme anger. As the duo takes these emotions to the limit, their human qualities are all but lost.

They delve into the history of Western art, from the Renaissance up to the present day. In doing so, they hope to find out how they can bring art history to the stage while staying true to the facts. How can they talk about art without sounding too condescending? And what can the past tell us about the future? Who knows, it might lead the three of them to a new beginning. Contemporary adaptation
of a key piece
in Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s career

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker created Elena’s Aria in 1984. It became a pivotal moment in her career. She used video and text for the first time and moved away from the repetition that marked her earlier work. The dancers do not dance to rhythmical music, but to arias, various sounds and long stretches of silence. It was a way of questioning her own work. Her doubts and restlessness come to the fore in a desolate performance. By performing this piece once more with young dancers, the introspective and retrospective character of the piece is given an extra dimension.

During Almost Cinema and the Film Festival Ghent, you’ll be able to watch ‘Rain’, a documentary that offers a look at the production process of Rain with the dancers of the Paris Opera Ballet.

This season, STAN will perform an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House. Wine Dierickx – known for her roles in Wunderbaum and Loft – and promising Portuguese actor Tiago Rodrigues take the stage alongside STAN regulars Jolente De Keersmaeker and Frank Vercruyssen.

Nora is a housewife who’s had enough of being domineered by her father and husband. Ibsen wrote the piece in the late 19th century, a period of great change and revolution which saw the end of a romantic world view in favour of a more hopeful future. Over a century later, the Western world finds itself in much the same situation. The piece questions social dogmas and subtly uncovers the pitfalls of family life, combined with STAN’s characteristic restrained nonchalance and the spirited performance.

Q&A is a concept by Vooruit and the Handelsbeurs which sees programmers of both houses join forces for a unique double bill. The concerts will take place at two different locations (i.e. Vooruit and the Handelsbeurs). It promises to be a thrilling Q&A between jazz and classical music!

The leitmotif of this Q&A session is Schubert’s Trout Quintet. Trout can easily be seen as a metaphor for everything that’s wrong with the world. Trout swims upstream to spawn, but the species is confronted with ever more human obstructions.

Schubert’s Trout Quintet is the starting point of this double bill. A group of top-notch musicians led by pianist Jan Vermeulen perform the piece as Schubert intended it.

Although jazz concerts are always a musical adventure, they often have little to offer in the visual department. Yves Peeters thinks this should change. His music is often described as narrative and imaginative. That is why he asked media artist Joop Parey to provide images and projections to accompany his band’s new songs. The visuals contribute to the unique atmosphere of the compositions. The band likes to experiment with all sorts of genres, ranging from Texan blues and country to the ideal soundtrack for the white-hot landscapes of the Sahel desert. The band consists of renowned musicians such as guitarist Frederik Leroux (who gave an impressive solo performance at Vooruit last season), bassist Nicolas Thys (Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Octurn) and saxophone player Nicolas Kummert (GrooveThing), who also provide vocals on some tracks.

Timon, a well-to-do citizen of Athens, likes to flaunt his wealth by throwing fancy dinners and parties and making large donations. Until the day he gets a visit from his creditors and all the money is gone. Timon seeks advice from his so-called friends who were regulars at his house, but when he asks them to borrow him money, they flatly refuse. Once a charming man, Timon turns into a misanthrope. He retreats to the woods and starts plotting his revenge.

It is the first installment in their Dollarcyclus, a series of pieces that will dissect the layers of (financial) misery.

Phililppe Quesne won the hearts of the audience with witty, charming performances such as ‘La mélancolie des dragons’ (about six rockers who drive around with a mobile amusement park until their car breaks down) and ‘L’Effet de Serge’ (about a man who performs a weekly show for his friends in his apartment). A vooruit.be user thought the show was “the best thing I ever saw at Vooruit”, while the VRT described it as “a masterpiece” and “an endearing and powerful piece”.

For this piece, the French playwright travelled to Japan to work with four young actresses. The outcome is not entirely clear yet, but knowing Quesne, you can probably expect a touching, surprising and unusual piece. The performance will have its world premiere at Vooruit.

Together they descend into the awe-inspiring vortex of energy designed by Stuart. Please, Continue (Hamlet) is a trial rather than an actual play. The scene is set in court. Hamlet, one of Shakespeare’s most well-known creations, is tried for the murder of Polonius. Apart from three actors, all roles are played by real lawyers, a judge and a psychiatrist. The audience plays the role of the jury and will have to decide on Hamlet’s guilt. This important role comes with great responsibility. Duyvendak and Bernat refer to the audience as “spect-actors”. The audience is relentlessly forced to think about excess and abuse in contemporary society.

Yan Duyvendak could previously be seen at Vooruit in November with ‘Made in Paradise’, together with Omar Ghayatt. Roger Bernat performed ‘Pending Vote’ in November.

In 2002, sax legend Charles Lloyd sees Greek singer Maria Farantouri in concert for the first time. They are introduced after the concert and a deep friendship blossoms. Lloyd and his innovative quartet are invited to perform alongside Farantour at the 2010 Hellenic Festival. “As the moon rose over the Herodion stage and Acropolis, the audience was treated to something that had never before been heard”, one review wrote. A seamless fusion of classically trained Greek musicians and jazz musicians. Lloyd and Farantouri are made for each other. On top of that, Jason Moran is on the keys!

The Rite of Spring is a ballet created for Les Ballets Russes by Sergei Diaghilev. It premiered at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées on 29 May 1913. The piece brings together the work of three of the most influential artists in European art history, i.e. choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky, costume and set designer Nicolas Roerich, and composer Igor Stravinsky. The ballet tells the story of a primitive tribe that sacrifices a young woman to the god of spring.

Exactly 100 years later, the piece is performed at the Vooruit building, which will also celebrate its centenary in the 2013. Le Sacre #197 (after the original French title Le Sacre du Printemps) is an adaptation of the original piece by French choreographer Domique Brun. Although the ballet has been performed over and over again, very little is known about the original choreography. French early 20th century artist Valentine Hugo made fourteen drawings of the final part of the ballet. Brun and her dancers used these to reconstruct the original choreography.

Le Sacre # 197 is an attempt at regaining attention to the power of rituals and the human body. Brun draws on previous adaptations of The Rite of Spring, ranging from classical ballets to modern dance. This legendary ballet and its intriguing character still resonate today. Juan Pablo Carreño adapted Stravinsky’s original score and Debussy’s fragments for mezzo soprano.

Piano trio The Bad Plus became world-famous with their quirky interpretations of rock songs by Radiohead, Nirvana, Aphex Twin, Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath. So why not try their hand at a classical piece like The Rite of Spring?

Stravinsky’s work is a milestone in music history and will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2013, just like Vooruit. According to composer Leonard Bernstein, the piece has the “best dissonances anyone ever thought up, and the best asymmetries and polytonalities and polyrhythms and whatever else you care to name.” The Bad Plus will give their own unique interpretation of the piece. The music will be accompanied by visuals by Cristina Guadalupe and film director Noah Hutton.
