Time for a little bit of history: The Stone River Boys were founded by former members of the country-soul band The Hacienda Brothers, which was fronted by Chris Gaffney and Dave Gonzales, the renowned frontman of roots rock/rockabilly band The Paladins. When Gaffney fell ill, his band mates decided to organize a benefit tour, replacing Gaffney with Texan singer Mike Barfield. After Gaffney’s death, Gonzales and Barfield went on as The Stone River Boys.

The band still combines soul and country, but instead of Gaffney’s slower Stax-inspired soul, Barfield has chosen a funkier, more uptempo direction – and you wondered why they called Barfield “The tyrant of Texas funk”. His deep voice also forms a clear shift from Gaffney. But The Stone River Boys aren’t just The Dap-Kings with cowboy hats, as the band maintains a distinct country sound.
