The global economic crisis has engendered a renewed interest in Karl Marx and new editions of his work. Can Marxist ideals help us to achieve a sustainable and productive economy? Or are we dealing with a short-lived hype? Two international thinkers, author Tariq Ali (‘The Clash of Fundamentalisms’, The New Left Review) and Professor of Literature and Cultural Studies Joseph Vogl will discuss their views at this event.
Lecture: The crisis, the political response and the future of democracy Tariq Ali is an author of Pakistani origin and currently lives in London. He has written over twenty books on world history and global politics (including ‘The Clash of Fundamentalisms’) and seven novels (including ‘Night of the Golden Butterflies’, the fifth and final part of the ‘Islam Quintet’) which have been translated into more than ten languages. He is also a member of the editiorial committee of The New Left Review.
Lecture: Volatile financial markets and the ghosts of capital Joseph Vogl, Professor of Literature and Cultural Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin. He is also a visiting professor at Princeton University. His new book, ‘ Die Gespenster des Kapitals’ (Ghosts of Capitalism) will be published in early 2011.
