Meg Stuart and the Portuguese choreographer and dancer Francisco Camacho first met in New York in the late eighties. He became one of the three dancers of Stuart’s first creation Disfigure Study (1991). In 2007 they decided to collaborate again on a solo for Francisco. In Blessed, basic elements such as rain, cardboard and human body, form the basis for the ultimate defence against total ruin and final destiny. The protagonist of the piece shows different faces in his pursuit of happiness. Though a work of great sombreness focused on the unrelenting struggle for life, Blessed comforts us with the sensitive power of the aesthetics of destruction. Hahn Rowe made a captivating sound design.
De Standaard called it “an intriguing performance that never ceases to amaze you.” De Morgen described it as “a piece in which tension runs high”.
