“Douglas has already been a household name since the nineties, when he was John Zorn’ s sidekick in Masada, but today he’s no less than one of the biggest names in jazz. And rightfully so, because he’s more versatile and prolific than any other jazz musician around.” – De Morgen on Dave Douglas
He’s been honoured as the best composer, best trumpeter and best jazz musician. Dave Douglas hardly has any room left for all the awards he has won over the years. He is, after all, one of the most significant jazz trumpeters of the past decades. In 2008 he came to Vooruit with the Dave Douglas 3, now he will be returning with Brass Ecstacy, his latest project. Using the trumpet, tuba, trombone and French horn, they will pay tribute to brass instruments and Douglas’s big example Lester Bowie, who revolutionized jazz by fusing it with pop, rock and even hip hop. On their album ‘Spirit Moves’ the band presents new compositions as well as quirky cover versions of Otis Redding, Hank Williams and Rufus Wainwright songs. Dave Douglas shows his most light-hearted side on this album: jazz and soul, with references to New Orleans jazz and even pop.
