For this piece, director Eric De Volder uses Ludwig Büchner, brother of playwright Georg Büchner, as the starting point. In 1850, Ludwig decides to publish Woyzeck, a play written by his brother who had come to pass in 1837. Because of his unexpected death, Georg was never able to finish the piece. Ludwig commences to write a final version of the play, much to the dislike of the characters, who realize that their lives depend on the decisions Ludwig makes in his adaptation.

‘Woyzeck’ is the first production resulting from the collaboration between the NTGent and Eric De Volder’s TG Ceremonia. The NTGent was eager to work with De Volder because of his expressionist style and his performance-oriented approach. On the other hand, the director from Ghent, who usually creates his own scripts, wanted to take a new step in his artistic career with the help of classic pieces. Composer Dominique Pauwels (LOD, Het Toneelhuis and Woestijnvis) will write a score especially for this Büchner adaptation.
