Last season, Antonia Baehr proved that she didn’t need much to win over the crowd with her performance Lachen, which got a four-star review in De Morgen. The piece saw the German theatre maker perform her ‘laughter compositions’, leaving the crowd in stitches after only a few minutes. Baehr is, however, not a comedian. She studies laughter in terms of sound, rhythm, volume and movement. In ‘For Faces’ she will also include other emotions in her research. This time, Baehr will not be on stage herself, as she will be in the director’s chair. In a miniature amphitheatre the size of a human head, four performers interpret Baehr’s facial compositions. The audience is seated right next to the actors and can see their expressions in close-up: pursed lips, blinking eyes, raised eyebrows, trembling nostrils. More than a form of expression or communication, the changing expressions form a subtle and remarkable choreography.
