John Irving (born 1942) is one of America’s most successful authors of the late 20th century. He studied literature at the University of New Hampshire and at the University of Iowa, and studied under Günther Grass – who would go on to wine the Nobel Prize in Literature- in Vienna. He published his first novel at age 26, with Charles Dickens as his biggest inspiration. He reached mainstream success in 1978 with The World According to Garp, which was turned into a successful movie just like most of his other work. In 1999, he won the Best Adapted Screenplay Academy Award for the script adapted from his book The Cider House Rules.
At Vooruit, John Irving will talk about his new novel, Last Night in Twisted River, accompanied by excerpts from his work.
