Florence and the Machine were probably the revelation of 2009. With only two singles to their name, the British band won the Critics’ Choice Brit Award nonetheless. Florence and the Machine were discovered at the South by Southwest festival and subsequently toured with band of the moment MGMT.
23-year-old Florence Welch is the driving force behind the band. Together with Alex James – formerly of Blur – she writes the music and lyrics. The debut album, ‘Lungs’ is impressive and poignant. Apart from having a compelling voice, the redhead singer is also a natural-born performer. It hardly needs saying that Florence and the Machine have received nothing but praise after performances at Pukkelpop 2009 and the Botanique.
