Do you have a reproduction of da Vinci’s Mona Lisa or Van Gogh’s Sunflowers in your home? Then chances are that it was produced in a Chinese reproduction village like Dafen Village. Every day, 10 000 painters are busy making copies of classic and contemporary paintings, generating around five million reproductions annually. The painters have a high social status: the best copies receive prizes and are even exhibited at museums.
Visual artist and musician Nikolaus Gansterer investigates the different attitude the West and China have towards reproductions. Further to his contribution to the Timefestival book, there is a small exhibition in the Box Office featuring images of the work conditions of these Chinese copycats. This also marks the start of Gansterer’s residency in the run-up to the 2011 edition of ‘the game is up!’ at Vooruit.
