In 2008 the band Brightblack Morning Light released their third album, Motion to rejoin, to critical acclaim on the Matador label. They recorded the album in an ecological studio with four solar panels in the New Mexico desert.
Musically, Brightblack Morning Light’s psychedelic Americana and blues is audibly influenced by various artists, from My Bloody Valentine to The Grateful Dead, and from Otis Redding to Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart and Will Oldham (with who they toured and recorded their album). Their reverb-drenched songs are often constructed around the same repetitive musical theme, but nevertheless manage to grab your attention for an entire set. Or to quote Humo, one of Belgium’s leading music magazines: “extremely languid, but incredibly exciting at the same time.”
John Peel said about American songwriter Cass McCombs that he is “unobtrusively brilliant”. BBC is also impressed by McCombs latest album ‘Catacombs’: “a true original, steeped in the troubadour’s art and with many engaging tales to tell. So while Catacombs probably isn’t a record that will change your life, for 50 minutes at a time it will certainly make it more enjoyable.”
