De Helaasheid der dingen (The Misfortunates), Felix Van Groeningen’s latest film based on the book by Dimitri Verhulst, will open the Ghent Film Festival this year. The film will be shown in Kinepolis (only by invitation) and in Vooruit (for the public), as part of the twin festival Almost Cinema.

13-year-old Gunther Strobbe lives at his grandmother’s house, together with his father and three uncles. The boy is confronted with huge amounts of alcohol, womanising and shameless loitering on a daily basis. Gunther’s life is destined the same fate. Or can he escape it?

The premiere will take place in Kinepolis Ghent on the 6th of October in the presence of the film’s protagonists. The rest of the audience can enjoy the film in Vooruit’s Theaterzaal on the 6th of October, followed by the opening party for the Film Festival and Almost Cinema.

The film will be followed by a great party to kick off the Almost Cinema festival There will be a Roy Orbison karaoke with guests, an amazing act from Aalst, and a smashing DJ set by MC Jonas, Lies & Thang in the Balzaal. Or you can chill in the Café to the sound of the sixties, seventies and eighties, as you buy yourself a typical Belgian ‘metre of beer’.
