When former Blur front man Damon Albarn and “Tank Girl” creator Jamie Hewlett dreamed up Gorillaz – the most successful virtual pop group in history – director Ceri Levy decided to document the whole adventure. The result is an affectionate, infectious close-up look at creativity run wild, peopled with charismatic characters both 2- and 3-D. From screaming fans to disapproving church elders, and with collaborators ranging from Dennis Hopper to Shaun Ryder, the seven-year Gorillaz odyssey is a very fun party to crash. “Bananaz” is an inspiring, free-wheeling, rather puerile comment on what can be done when creative minds meet in the spirit of collaboration.
