The Slackers are one of the most famous bands from the New York ska scene (other names include The Toasters, The Pietasters, The Aggrolites and The New York Ska Jazz Ensemble). The sound The Slackers produce is usually described as ‘Jamaican Rock and Roll’, influenced by The Skatalites and The Upsetters (The Wailers, Lee Perry). But The Slackers have a distinctly American take on the genre, adding sixties soul, reggae, rocksteady, dub and ska as well as garage rock, old blues and jazz to the mix.

Their catchy blend of styles is best experienced at one of their many gigs, with frequent tour dates in Europe (Pukkelpop, Lowlands, Dour, Bourges, etc.). Since their 1981 foundation in Brooklyn they have been known as America’s best performers of Jamaican music. Their albums – a dozen so far – have all appeared on the renowned punk label Hellcat Records. Self Medication, their newest album, will be released soon.
