At Hugo Claus’s funeral, author Cees Nooteboom asked his dear friend’s ghost to watch over him. Another person keen on keeping Claus’s memory alive was dramatist Josse De Pauw. For De Versie Claus he made an adaptation of Groepsportret, a book in which Mark Schaevers uses collected interviews to draw a portrait of Hugo Claus. The result is an impressive monologue based on excerpts of Claus’s interviews and echoes of his work. De versie Claus is a polyphonic monologue, just like the author’s life.
