On Saturday the 19th of July Electrified presents a DC Recordings special with The Emperor Machine, The Oscillation, Kelpe and a DJ set by label chief, Depth Charge. Watch a video report on the DC Recrodings label night on Electrified.
Squirrels, robots, perversions and badgers – that’s what DC Recordings is all about. The decade-old label is led by J Saul Kane, known to fans as Depth Charge. After the demise of Vinyl Solution Kane started a new label as a release for his own musical concoctions, but he soon asked his artist friends to join him. More than 60 releases later, DC Recordings is an established name for dance fans who like their music adventurous and well-rounded.
Andy Meecham is The Emperor Machine, a mutant with a perverse preference for the sleazy side of nightlife who slyly combines disco, psychedelic rock and music from the space age. He debuted in 2004 with ‘Pro Mars’ and ‘Aimee Tallulah is Hypnotised’, and in 2006 and 2007 he released the six-part 12” series ‘Vertical Tones & Horizontal Noise’. He is currently preparing his first live concerts.
When Kel McKeown got his first Commodore Amiga the foundation for Kelpe had been laid. But it was not until 2003 that ‘The People Are Trying To Sleep’, his first single, was released on DC Recordings. Influenced by Warp-style bleeps and bass lines, spectre folk in the tradition of John Renbourn, Steve Reich’s minimalism and the percussive space-scapes of Do Make Say Think, Kelpe is on his own sonic adventure, as you can hear on his latest album, ‘Ex-Aquarium’.
Deman Castellanos started The Oscillation as a solo project, following up the Orichalc Phase. The Oscillation stands for a bewildering mix of pop songs and expansive krautrock-influenced freak-outs, not unlike bands such as Spacemen 3, Spiritualized and Loop. After the release of his debut album ‘Out of Phase’, Castellanos assembled a band to perform the exciting recorded material live.
