FRI 18 JULY – SUN 21 SEPTEMBER – KUNST NU SPACE (SMAK) + CITADEL PARK

Trend-setting artists Ronald Kuivila (US) and Edwin van der Heide (NL) will colour the Electrified. Despite the age gap and their dissimilar careers there are some interesting artistic parallels between the pair. Both artists will bring compositions to the SMAK that grant a great deal of attention to elements of nature.Watch two clips about their installations on Electrified.

Edwin van der Heide is a young Dutch artist-composer who feels at home in music, sound and media art. His first projects were performances with self-made instruments based on sensors and later evolved into (interactive) sound installations. For Electrified, Edwin van der Heide will set up his Pneumatic Sound Field right outside the museum and will present Field of Overtones, his newest installation. Pneumatic Sound Field is a sound installation that consists of a grid with a series of beams taking up a 10 by 20 metre space in the Citadel park. The public is challenged to find its own place in the sounds of the environs. Field of Overtones is a spatial sound installation inspired by the character of the wind and has been especially designed for the former casino rear facade of the SMAK. The work will premiere at Electrified 09, but you can catch a glimpse of the installation at the SMAK this summer.

Ronald Kuivila was one of the first sound artists who worked with sampling and ultrasonic sound during live performances. The specific architectural shape of the Kunst Nu space in the SMAK is ideal for Ron Kuivila’s sound installation Skewed Lines. In this long dark space the artist hangs two parallel steel wires between which electric high voltage is generated, creating sound or even ‘music’.
