In May 2008 it will have been forty years since the May 1968 student protests broke out in Paris. What’s left of the May 1968 ideology forty years on? What happened to the power of imagination? Have we traded the relative security of the rat race for political freedom? Is our future now made of fear instead of hope? Have the barricades been replaced by civil society? Do students and unions still share the same goals? How materialistic and mute are youngsters today? Is there still such a thing as an activist scientist? “All rebels become CEOs eventually.” True or false? What’s left of the left forty years after May 1968? Was it all just about sex, drugs and rock and roll?

Along with debates and lectures with national and international speakers at Ghent University and Vooruit you will be able to enjoy an exhibition, documentaries, films and music from the sixties.

The first debate evening, on Wednesday the 14th of May, will look back at the events of May 1968.
What really happened in May 1968 and what are the myths surrounding it?
A critical reconstruction will be made by witnesses of the time. Guests will include Jos Geysels (Minister of State); Piet Piryns (journalist for Knack); professor Etienne Vermeersch$ (former rector of Ghent University and influential figure in Flemish society); professor Eric Corijn (philosopher and cultural sociologist at the Free University of Brussels); Luc Van den Bossche (former minister and currently the president of the Brussels Airport Company). The opening speech will be held by Prof. dr. Paul Van Cauwenberghe*, rector of Ghent University.
