Icelandic Kira Kira thinks her own music is “tricky to describe”, but we would say it’s dreamy toy music and lightly experimental pop that brings to mind the geisers and the troll landscapes of her home country. Think of a cross between CocoRosie and her fellow countrymen Sigur Rós.
Kira Kira first came to Vooruit for the Etoiles Polaires festival in 2004 together with Icelandic band Mugison and returned in 2006 for the Kitchen Motors evening. Now she’s back with members of Icelandic bands Múm and Parachutes, a line-up first tried out at the Iceland Airwaves festival.
Apart from Kira Kira, you’ll also be able to enjoy young guns Parachutes, part of Kira Kira’s band. This will be the first time that they will be performing outside of Iceland! They sound fragile and sleepy, as if they have been stored in a refrigerator for the past couple of years and now have finally come out. An as yet undiscovered Icelandic gem!
Pondus – “music made in the dark winter for people in the dark” – will kick off the evening: In past, members of Pondus have performed with Apparat Organ Quartet, Mugison, SlowBlow, Marc Almond, Sigur Ros, Emilie Simon and Kylie Minogue. At Vooruit they will present new work.
