It was a problem with electronic apparatus that first brought together the members of electronic band Shogun Kunitoki. Although the quartet has been making music since the 90s, they have only just released their debut album Tasankokaiku. Although Shogun Kunitoki sounds quite Japanese, the band is firmly based in the Finnish capital Helsinki.
Their songs sound like a kaleidoscope of 5 decades of electronic music, psychedelics and minimalism, and are influenced by 60s music by composers such as Steve Reich and Ennio Morricone. The result is strange yet familiar, groovy and melodic, electronic and human. Their pumping beats and layered songs are situated somewhere in between Tortoise and Apparat Organ Quartet, which makes them sound unique and fresh.
