The American singer-songwriter John Vanderslice gets inspiration from the small things in life, and his newest album, Emerald city, is perfect proof of that. The album came about as a result of the problems his French girlfriend was having getting a visa for the US.

Emerald City is his sixth full album, so he’s not exactly a new kid on the block. However, Vanderslice still works in an ‘old school’ fashion. In his famous Tiny Telephone studio, Vanderslice examines every sound carefully, obsessively even. That’s exactly what makes Vanderslice’s sound so unique.

John Vanderslice may not be as famous as artists such as Bright Eyes and Sufjan Stevens, but if you listen carefully, you’ll notice that these two were probably inspired by him. On Emerald City, he’s moved away from electronic wizardry, hereby emphasizing his bittersweet lyrics. With his unpredictable melodies and acoustic guitars, Vanderslice is the undisputable king of fanciful songwriting.
