The star dancer of the Canadian La la la human steps company, energetic and acrobatic Louise Lecavalier was the first Canadian citizen to receive the Bessie Award, the Oscar of the dancing world. During her 30-year career, she even shared the stage with the likes of David Bowie and Frank Zappa.
Though she is going on 50, Lecavalier asked a number of choreographers to create a solo performance for her. Among those who accepted was Benoît Lachambre, who had previously worked with Meg Stuart. In this minimalist, yet physically demanding performance ‘I is memory’, Lachambre forces Lecavalier to deviate from classical dance by means of bizarre soundscapes and hip hop dance moves. Despite the oversized sneakers, Lecavalier’s charisma gains respect and admiration from the audience.
