While the Octurn (B) ensemble is greatly indebted to modern jazz, it also embraces other contemporary influences. For its ‘XPs’ project, for instance, Octurn has chosen to work with flute player Magic Malik (F) who is well-known for his collaboration with Steve Coleman, St. Germain and Anga Diaz. An up-and-coming star with a unique technique, Magic Malik effortlessly alternates between pure energy and long drone sounds. ‘XPs’ (short for “Experiences”) are short musical studies centered on shapes and architecture. Both Octurn and Magic Malik contribute their own impressions of this fascinating subject.
